Greece names and shames alleged top tax evaders

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Debt-crippled Greece has named some 4,000 alleged tax dodgers, including a former media magnate and a prominent entertainer, with the worst offender owing the state nearly euro1 billion ($1.3 billion).

But much of that money might never be reclaimed, as some of the top offenders are in prison or their companies are bankrupt.

The list published by the Finance Ministry late Sunday is part of a campaign to crack down on rampant tax evasion, which — coupled with inefficient tax collection — is hampering the recession-hit eurozone member's painful efforts to avoid bankruptcy.

At the top of the list was a 58-year-old accountant, currently serving terms of more than 100 years in prison for tax fraud, who allegedly owes some euro950 million. Most of that sum, however, is in surcharges and fines.

At least another three people convicted over the same scam figure high on the list, which includes debts of more than euro170,000 ($221,000).

But ministry officials acknowledged that it would be extremely hard to collect many of the outstanding debts — which total nearly euro15 billion ($19.5 billion).

"The truth is that these lists contain debtors who in some cases have owed the money for a long period of time, so after a certain point one does not expect to be able to collect the debts," finance ministry official Haris Theocharis said Monday.

"But I'm sure that there are possibilities ... In some cases (publication) will push debtors to settle their debts, and tax offices to redouble their efforts," Theocharis, who is head of the ministry's general secretariat of information systems that compiled the list, told the Associated Press.

Theocharis argued that the list could also dispel popular misconceptions on the recovery prospects for such debts.

"When more than a year ago the finance minister of the day tried to table legislation to cancel some of these debts that were considered impossible to reclaim, there was a public outcry," he said.

"People say, 'oh there's euro41 billion in outstanding (tax) debts, and if we reclaim that sum then we won't have any problems,'" he said. "This kind of talk has no meaning."

Despite repeated pledges over the past two years, Greek officials have failed to make progress in collecting outstanding debts, which the European Commission task force for Greece calculates at about euro60 billion ($78 billion) — little more than a tenth of which is seen as collectible.

The country's annual gross domestic product is about euro218 billion, while the 2011 budget deficit is expected to be around euro19.7 billion.

The government has acknowledged the grave shortcomings of its tax service, even admitting that a hugely unpopular new property tax under which nonpaying households will have their electricity cut off might not have been imposed if the tax collection system were more efficient.

The ignorance and 'constipational' stances of inept political parties (Both ND and PASOK, their offshoots and leftists) have created a Parliament 5X the size of much bigger countries where each member costs each taxpayer 20+ million/year, for doing WHAT? Getting the country into this mess.

It is the cronies of these political parties that decorate the top posts of 'constipational' ministries….love that word…..that block all budget-cutting, employee cut-back, tax collection, constitutional and judicial reform efforts.

If there should be any slogan in upcoming elections, it should be, "NO MORE POLITICIANS, NO MORE RHETORIC, NEW NAMES, NEW ETHICS."

As a tax-paying citizen, I want to see poitical and ministry decision-makers punished, in jails, their Swiss bank accounts and assets frozen. I want to see them at the Hague courts, and not ones run by their cronies and the laws they have manipulated to maintain their asylum and to write-off their corrupt pasts.

As a last step measure, The State could always appropriate the miscreants property, if any, cast them into the streets, sell it to the highest bidder, then let the people of the country deal with their newest visitor, to the land of the Great Unwashed. A tad harsh, but these are hard times that call for harsh measures. But what are the chances of that ever happening?

The so called "Name & Shame" list is a big "STUNT" by the Greek government as these names or businesses do not exist in reality. The Greek government is trying hard to save its skin and reputation to gain trust from dissatisfied and discontent Greeks. Till today, Greek politicians did not act to the best of their knowledge to save the country from its crisis brought by past and present government and ministers. The EU and the IMF should understand by now that the Greek government has no intention of changing or implementing what has been agreed upon by the commission from fears of loosing their positions and supporters. Greece needs new politicians and new system as the present politicians are all crooks and the system is corrupt.

I wonder if they look into the Greek politicians, how much they mitve cheated on there taxes, let alone the corruption. Its like the pot calling the Kettle black.I think they should also clean the government.Old Greek saying the "fish rotts from the head first" meaning it all starts from the top of the government officials and works its way down.Any body who works in the government should be a good role model for its citizens, but are they?Corruption is contagious, and this is not just a Greece its in every country.

Surcharges and fines of a billion dollars? People already charged with fraud and are serving a 100 years are put on a list of "shame"? Greece is in denial, here. No wonder it is in a mess, if this is all they can come up with in terms of accountability.

Because the gov allows companies who had losses the previous year to apply those losses to this year. BofA is a perfect example.

2 - donations to gov officials are tax free
