Greek ferry fire: Daring air rescues captured in dramatic videos

Rescue workers completed the evacuation Monday of hundreds of passengers on board a Greek ferry that caught fire off the coast of Albania over the weekend, killing at least seven people.

Dramatic videos released by the Italian navy and Greek coast guard showed passengers on the Norman Atlantic awaiting helicopter crews battling high winds, waves and freezing temperatures to pluck survivors from the doomed ship.

Another video showed a passenger airlifted to safety by a naval helicopter.

Officials say the fire broke out on a car deck of the ferry, which was en route from the Greek port of Patras to Ancona in Italy.

One of the survivors, Nick Channing-Williams, a 37-year-old British man, described being stranded as flames engulfed the ship.

"There were moments when I was absolutely terrified," Channing-Williams told Sky News. "When the flames are licking up around the boat and there's no sign of help and they're talking about sending a boat that is four hours away, you feel somewhat helpless."

Footage taken by another passenger on the ferry's deck showed the fire inside the cabin as other passengers donned life vests.
