Greek village priest held over church treasure dig

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — Police in northern Greece have arrested a village priest and a church elder for allegedly digging for treasure in the chancel of the church.

A police statement Friday says villagers complained of loud drilling noises late Thursday from the church at Fyska near Kilkis, some 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Thessaloniki.

Officers found a two-by-one-meter (six-by-three-foot) hole in the chancel of the 150-year-old church of the Prophet Elijah. Police are seeking four other people suspected of taking part in the illegal dig — in which a pneumatic drill was used.

Illegal treasure hunting has increased amid Greece's acute financial crisis. In recent months, police have made a string of arrests, mainly in the north of the country, and located several tunnels.

It would be nice if the story had stated what sort of treasures they were expecting to find buried there.

A human skull alone can fetch well over $1000. Not exactly the treasure you might expect, but it would pay the bills.

I would have loved to have heard the priest's explanation to the congregation come Sunday morning as to why there is a hole in the church.

Ok, maybe you guys all have jobs and are living comfortably. Things were bad in Athens when I lived there back in 2003 -2005. Old women sold tissues in the street. Stores were sitting vacant. I would hate to see what it is now. When you guys start living on one meal a day, then you can talk. Until you have actually experienced hunger, quit casting stones. If you are such high and mighty Christrians, you know what Jesus said about that!

Scottish Blast, at least there are some people that can understand things like that. My hat off to you. When I was a child, my Mother always said she would starve before she would steal but in the same breath she said if my children were starving I do not know how far I would go to feed them. None of us know what we would do in that situation. I only wish that many of the people that are so quick to throw stones would have to experience it for a little while anyway.

Been there, done that. In the early 90's me and my family had to live on Oatmeal, three times a day for several months. When we could splurge, we went to a restaurant and my wife and daughter would slit a plate of fries while I drank water. Thankfully, we Americans live in a country, even now, where one can better him or herself, and we have, but the memory is vivid. We forget, though, that other counties do not fall in the same category, and it is more difficult, that is why I donate as much as I can to help.

They have dug under St. Peters.....found the bones of Peter, the first Bishop of Rome and First Pope, they dug in many places and find the catacombs where the first Catholic Christians worshipped. Only treasures found are priceless antiquiities and history......so what's in your COFFECUP? TOO MUCH CAFFIENE?

OK, Yellowhammer, you may be so ignorant that you have not heard of Jim Bakker, Robert Schuler and the Crystal Cathedral or any of the thousands of Baptist megachurches in the US that live large on the backs of their congregations. Greed and desperation know no bounds.

It looks like the corrupt Greek government is desperate going after treasure hunters. Big question did they find anything; answer NO; if the corrupt Greek government did the digging and something was found the government and its corrupt politicians would of taken everything for themselves!

The "Authorities" were ticked off "cause they did not think to dig there first. Priests beat them to it. I guess you can say that in Greece, they are looking for money under every flat rock!
