Some Greeks Might Have to Pay for Their Jobs

Some Greeks Might Have to Pay for Their Jobs

It's being called the "negative salary": Due to austerity measures in Greece, it's being reported that up to 64,000 Greeks will go without pay this month, and some will have to pay for having a job. Numbers in austerity reports have usually reflected figures in the millions, since they reflect industry-wide cuts (i.e.  a 537-million euro cut to health and pension funds). And plans of cutting minimum wage by up to 32% is all but a given in the country. Today's "negative salary" deal—which could have government employees returning funds— reveals the real human impact of the austerity measures.

As Zero Hedge and the Press Project report:

Salary cutbacks (called "unified payroll") for contract workers at the public sector set to be finalized today. Cuts to be valid retroactively since november 2011. Expected result: Up to 64.000 people will work without salary this month, or even be asked to return money. Amongst them 21.000 teachers, 13.000 municipal employees and 30.000 civil servants.

See what happens to their country when all of the teachers have to quit and they have no schools.
    • Tone  •  3 mths ago
Maybe we could implement that here. Starting with every member of Congress.

If Americans would just awaken to the dangers of left wing ideals, we would not have this problem..sadly, the lefties seem to be overly brain dead to what disaster they are creating...starting with obama

This wan't all created by the Democrats, so you need to end the partisanship! They both have created the mess we are in and until we get on the same page things we remain the same. Greece did what they did and now they are paying for it, unfortunaltely those that put them there aren't the ones that are going to feel the real pain.

And you think your job sucks.

If it becomes permanent, China can outsource jobs to Greece for lower labor rates.
      • JamesJ 3 mths ago
Yeah, and then they'll get smart and buy robots from my company - even with robots placed in the U.S., the labor is far, far cheaper, 24/7 and never a complaint or lawsuit.

This should have been the policy when we bailed out our banks and financial institutions.. But nope we bailout the problem and they go on trips and pay off bonuses..

        Huh?
      • Matt 3 mths ago
That's true, and in fact, the gambling on Wall Street had a lot to do with the mess the Greeks are in now. Giving them destined to fail financing and encouraging them to invest in subprime crap while hiding the risk off the books.

John, Brian makes a good point, I don't get what is so hard to understand.

Greece would be better off if they left the Euro and followed Iceland's lead.

Democrat/Republican it honestly doesn't matter. You can keep pointing all the fingers you want at who to blame but none of them are any different than the others. They just choose how to screw us over in different ways.

More debt exists in the world than can ever be repaid, thus, guaranteeing the Greek scenario will repeat itself in every nation that engages in deficit spending. Get ready America, Western Europe, and Japan, you're on deck...

This will cause a 'brain drain', Greeks with knowledge/skills/high level of education will immigrate out of the country, and Greece will end up even worse down the line.

I am scared to death that America is going to be like this. I thought it was bad enough here.
    • FireB  •  Washington, District of Columbia  •  3 mths ago
Is Greece socialist? I think the answer is yes, yet we're in the same boat as them. Wait a minute Canada is socialist...but they're doing better than us. Maybe we better drop that whole Socialist, Capitalist debate and focus on arguing about what good governance is. I'm not seeing where either, in its pure form, is unfailing. Tea Baggers and pinko Occupiers unite! You both want the same thing. A government that works for you.

Coming soon to a United States near you...

We're doing the same stuff they were doing. Think it won't happen here? Think again.

Congress should work without pay till they actually do something on time and for the people not for themselves.
    • Yep Yep  •  3 mths ago
America you are already there. You have sold your children & grandchildren out, $50,000.00 per man, woman & every child. This is before they pay their own taxes. You can't pay it. Brace yourself and it will come soon. Thank your politicians.

Its always the people of a land that have to pay for the governments mistakes...sad

Thomas Jefferson warned us about this.

"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered...I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies... The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs."
    • Yulisis  •  Houston, Texas  •  3 mths ago
Throw the Greek politicians in jail and sell all of their property. Drain their bank accounts as well. That should pay for some of it.
