COMMENTARY | In a shocking and bewildering announcement, Roseanne Barr has proclaimed herself as a potential candidate for president of the United States on the Green Party ticket.
I didn't see that coming. I love her as a comedian and grew up watching "Roseanne," but does she have a serious side? Can she control her temper, and does she have a filter between her brain and mouth that would stop her from making a fool of herself in front of Congress, other dignitaries, and business men and women? Does she know what it's going to take to run the country and manage all of our overseas interests? I almost wish there was an internship for potential presidents so we knew how the candidate would react to specific presidential situations ahead of time.
Barr actually announced her aspirations for the presidency in August on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno . She stated, "My announcement is that I am running for president of the United States."
I don't blame her for running. Everyone in the country knows who Barr is, but we need to see her in some debates, and we need to see her in some debates prior to the Baltimore convention in July. The Republicans already have a huge jump on the Green Party. We've seen several debates between Romney, Santorum, Gingrich, and Paul, and we know one of those four candidates will go up against Obama. We need to hear Barr, listen to what she has to say and decide if she is a real contender for the presidency. If she is, she has her work cut out for her because she will be going up against Obama and whoever the Republican Party picks as a candidate.
So far, what we have from Barr are great statements and sound bites such as, "The Democrats and Republicans have proven that they are servants -- bought and paid for by the 1 percent -- who are not doing what's in the best interest of the American people," as reported by The Associated Press. That statement isn't going to be enough to win the presidency. She will need to come up with concrete plans and be able to lay those plans out before the American people.
I will give Barr one thing. She is extremely outspoken. I'm sure whatever is on her mind, she will feel free to tell the entire American public. I hope she does, but I hope she does it with some control and class. I also hope she shows her serious business side. We need to know how she performs in high stress situations, and how she performs after long nights on the road and long days meeting and greeting potential voters. We also need to see how she plans to get her name out there as a serious candidate and not just as a great comedian.
