Grimethorpe: Cordon lifted after bomb squad called to village

Police have concluded their searches and removed the remainder of a cordon put in place after the bomb squad was called to a South Yorkshire village.

Dozens of homes were evacuated on Wednesday following the discovery of "suspicious items" in a property in Brierley Road, Grimethorpe.

Police have since charged Ian Claughton, 58, and Lesley Claughton, 57, with drug and firearms offences.

The duo, of Brierley Road, will appear at Sheffield Crown Court in June.

South Yorkshire Police said Ian and Lesley Claughton were charged with bringing a realistic firearm into the UK, two counts of possession with intent to supply class B drugs, possession of a firearm and being concerned with the production of class B drugs.

Mr Claughton has also been charged with setting a man trap with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.

Both appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Friday and Mr Claughton was remanded in custody ahead of his next court hearing.

Ms Claughton has been released on conditional bail.

Police said emergency services, including the army's explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team, were called to Brierley Road after officers discovered a number of "suspicious items" during a property search.

A 100m (328ft) cordon was put in place and around 130 properties were subsequently evacuated.

The size of the cordon was reduced on Thursday and was fully removed on Friday evening, police have confirmed.

A spokesperson said: "Local residents who were originally evacuated have now been able to home after a number of suspicious items were removed and the area was made safe by colleagues from the army's EOD team."
