In a Facebook post, the City of Gulf Shores announced the date for the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Gulf Shores High School.

Construction is set to start on Friday, April 26, at 10 a.m., according to the post.

The new school, to be located at 21656 Coastal Gateway Boulevard in Gulf Shores, will accommodate over 1,500 students — more than double the capacity of the current school.

According to previous reporting, a $131 million bid was approved in February to build what officials describe as a “state-of-the-art high school.”

Aside from holding more students, officials say the new school will provide opportunities for hands-on learning experiences, new technology, science labs, spaces for band, coral, and art students, and a new athletics center.

School officials previously told WKRG News 5’s Whitney Leibold, “It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a school built around learning needs instead of just pure capacity. This will be a school that serves the children of Gulf Shores for many many years.”

Construction is set to be completed for the 2026-2027 school year, according to the post.
