Group predicts 522M could have diabetes by 2030

GENEVA (AP) — The International Diabetes Federation predicts that one in 10 adults could have diabetes by 2030, according to their latest statistics. In a report issued on Monday, the advocacy group estimated that 522 million people would have diabetes in the next two decades, based on things like aging and demographic changes.

The figure includes both types of diabetes. The group expects the number of cases to jump by 90 percent even in Africa, where infectious diseases have previously been the top killer. Without including the impact of increasing obesity, the International Diabetes Federation said its figures were conservative.

According to the World Health Organization, there are about 346 million people worldwide with diabetes, with more than 80 percent of deaths occurring in developing countries. The agency projects diabetes deaths will double by 2030 and said the International Diabetes Federation's prediction was possible.

"It's a credible figure," said Gojka Roglic, head of WHO's diabetes unit. "But whether or not it's correct, we can't say."

Roglic said the projected future rise in diabetes cases was because of aging rather than the obesity epidemic. Most cases of diabetes are Type 2, the kind that mainly hits people in middle age, and is linked to weight gain and a sedentary lifestyle.

Roglic said a substantial number of future diabetes cases were preventable. "It's worrying because these people will have an illness which is serious, debilitating, and shortens their lives," she said. "But it doesn't have to happen if we take the right interventions."

there is a lot of crap in the food here in the US and our government doesnt want to label it. food dyes, genetically modified is NOT the same, fillers and preservatives. drink some water and eat more vegetables and fruit and beans.

A true as that may be, this also includes, some of those, that have a Genetic problem with Diabetes. o_O They could have, or they do have Type 1, and it, progressively, gets worse, due to the foods they eat. x3
      • seethepositive 6 mths ago
type 1 diabetes had been helped by a clinic in az years ago. they eliminated all processed food. genetically modifed too. it did take longer for those with type 1 to benefit but their insulin amount was able to be cut to a lower amount. aloe vera juice may help but as all drinks in moderation and something else but i cant remember. but you have to go all natural and not a combination.

As the mother of a child with type 1 diabetes I am SHOCKED at the ignorant comments of some of those posting here. MY child was diagnosed at age 4 with type 1 diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes is an auto-immune disorder. Type 1 DIabetes has NOTHING to do with obesity (he weighed 34 pounds and was almost 4 feet tall), NOTHING to do with "fast food" (we eat at those types of place a couple times a year at most!) and NOTHING to do with diet or exercise! It is caused by a genetic predisposition AND and an as yet unknown environmental factor that may vary from person to person. This is a disease that effects millions who have done NOTHING to cause it. I hope that one day a cre is found so my son, now age 6 can stop taking 4+ injections per day.
      • Ziggy 6 mths ago
Carol. Have you ever thought about the insulin pump? I think it is great. We have one for my son that is made by Medtronics.
      • Ziggy 6 mths ago
My first response has disappeared. I have been trying to make your point as well. My son was 18 months old when he was diagnosed. He had a good diet. Lots of veggies and fruits. He also was in the 50th percentile for weight and height. He is 4 now and doing great. Our 6 month old daughter has the genetic markers for diabetes. Hopefully she doesnt get it and I hope they come up with a cure for it. Well, you can get a pancreas transplant but that is riskier than just dealing with diabetes. They have also been doing tests on transplanting cells into the pancreas that do help the pancreas start to produce insulin again, but that is also risky and they definitely dont let children have that procedure. Just like a pancreatic transplant, I think you have to take anti-rejection medicine for the rest of your life. Hopefully, they can build off this.

Hi Carol: Most of the comments here are referring to the preventable Type 2 diabetes, not Type 1.
    • Ziggy  •  6 mths ago
I am getting thumbs down for stating the facts. Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease in which a body's own immune system attacks the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. It has nothing to do with exercise or eating McDonalds. Type 1 has been around forever. It has been noted in ancient Egyption manuscripts as well as other ancient civilizations and they certainly didnt eat too much McDonalds. It was pretty much a death sentence until the 1920's when scientists finally figured it out. Please do research before you start spouting off about diabetics being Fat lazy slobs. A baby as young as 6 months can get diabetes.
      • Ziggy 6 mths ago
Thumbs down from the ignorant people that just spout off nonsense instead of actually doing research and getting the facts.
      • Bato 6 mths ago
No actually you are correct about auto-immune.. That is very profound, particularly with genetically driven Type 1.. But it auto-immune is culprit as well with Type 2. This the diabetes the developed among the people that do not have that inborn diabetes (Type 1), and grew up normal but as they matured with stress; emotional, physical, and mental along the way, this acerbated the health of teh person and triggred the rise of auto-immune sybdrome. Then cones the arthritis, coronary, hypetension, and kidney dysfunction as fatal complications. These chronic diseases as natural dying processes are incurable; only medical interventions to alleviate the symptons...

What a ridiculous article. First of all you cannot discuss Type I and Type II without making the distinction between an autoimmune disease (insulin dependent Type I) and a life style disease (non-insulin dependent Type II). So is this article about rapidly increasing cases of autoimmune diseases or obesity?
    • A Yahoo! user  •  6 mths ago
I don't know enough about the disease to attribute the increase to anything. I do know there are two different kinds, and I do see people developing type 2 as they age - some of them accept that they will get it because their parents had it - so they do nothing to prevent or handle it and readily accept medication and the problems that come along with it. Others are able through diet to avoid medication and I have even seen a person lose weight and thus be able to stop the medication. It's a vicious circle, though, as people gain weight and then cannot exercise and then have nothing to look forward to but eating and so it goes...

"But it doesn't have to happen if we take the right interventions."

That sounds ominous; just exactly whom does she mean by "we" and what does she mean by "the right interventions"?

Obesity and the lack of exercise equal, diabetes.
      • Ziggy 6 mths ago
Not type 1 diabetes, which is juvenile diabetes. That is an auto-immune disease.
      • Ziggy 6 mths ago
even fit people that eat well get type 2 diabetes, but yes alot of times lack of exercise and obesity contribute to type 2, which is adult-onset diabetes.
      • David 6 mths ago
I would like to see the correlation between type 1 diabetes and all the chemicals and crap that people eat.
    • Christian M  •  Panama City, United States  •  6 mths ago
The majority of diabetes is avoided by diet and exercise. But instead the healthy are labled nuts (heath food nut/ work out nut) and laziness, sloth, and gorging on garbage (I mean come on, what is a pork rind? it's the part of the pig they coundn't make into a sausage for christ's sake) is considered normal acceptable behavior.

This is so frustrating. Doctors have it all wrong. You don't get diabetes because you got fat. You get fat because you have diabetes. You don't wake up one day with this problem. It starts when you are a teenager or younger (a healthy skinny one) and just continues to get worse until your body can no longer handle it. Yes diet is a factor but only because you have it and don't know it. There are plenty of people out there who eat crap and never develop diabetes while there are tons who you would never suspect of having type 2 diabetes. I personally think you are born with type 2 diabetes, and your diet determines how fast you start to see the major symptoms. High fasting blood sugar is basically the last symptom you will see and the only one doctors focus on. I wish more doctors would open their eyes and help people.

But... but... Moochelle's "Let's End Obesity" campaign is going to eradicate diabetes as a problem, isn't it? Remember kids, glommin down ribs like Joey Chestnut at a hotdog-eating contest isn't the way to go. Do as I say, not as I do.

Read up on McRibs, McNuggets if there's a piece of pork tongue in the McRib they can call it pork, if there is a piece of chicken skin in the nugget it can be called McNugget, just gross

I wonder how many of these "developing countries" have a McDonald's franchise?
    • grasence  •  6 mths ago
I think its obvious why a large percentage of diabetes exists in developing countries. Look at how the American infiltration of junk food has transformed what was probably a much more healthy diet of the native people to American soda, burger, and fries junk food. Sad.

      Supersize that soda.
