Guam hoping to add lifeguards this year
HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — Guam is hoping to boost the number of lifeguards it has patrolling beaches and swimming pools in the territory.
Pacific Daily News reported Tuesday (http://bit.ly/1jpNaBd ) that the territory's Department of Parks and Recreation currently has eight lifeguards, no lifeguard instructors and six vacancies.
Director Raymond Blas says government officials are working on plans to improve the program. He says the department needs equipment and people at the island's beaches.
Blas says beaches will be better staffed once three more lifeguards are hired this year, but need more.
He says the department is considering a volunteer lifeguard program.
