Guatemala prez to propose legalizing drugs

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina said Saturday he will propose legalizing drugs in Central America in an upcoming meeting with the region's leaders.

Perez Molina said in a radio interview that his proposal would include decriminalizing the transportation of drugs through the area.

"I want to bring this discussion to the table," he said. "It wouldn't be a crime to transport, to move drugs. It would all have to be regulated."

Perez Molina, a former army general who took office last month, didn't give any other details about his proposal, mention specific drugs or say when the next meeting with Central American leaders will be.

He said he will bring the subject up with Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes when Funes visits Monday.

The Guatemalan president said the war on drugs and all the money and technology received from the U.S. has not diminished drug trafficking in the area.

"There was talk of the success of Plan Colombia but all it did was neutralize big cartels," Perez Molina said of a U.S. initiative supporting Colombia's fight against leftist rebels and far-right militias involved in the drug trade.

Perez Molina also blamed drug cartels for rampant violence in Guatemala, which has a homicide rate of 41 murders per 100,000 people.

The president took office pledging to wield an "iron fist" against crime.

Authorities say both the Zetas and the Sinaloa drug cartels are running and processing drugs in Guatemala and may be competing for territory, especially in the province of Peten near the border with Mexico.

I do not do drugs, not even pot but in saying that I do know people who smoke pot and live peaceful normal lives and would not hurt a flea. Why are we (America) spending so much money throwing good people in jail and wasting the time of local police hunting these people when the real criminals live in D.C. and ripp off the American people daily.

Because we are morons who vote for morons and when anybody proposes that we legalize drugs, we (being morons) marginalize them.

They legalized the transport and sale of alcohol in the United States and the US did not collapse. As a matter of fact Al Capone and large organized crime groups (Like cartels) collapsed. Today I have no fear of rum runners and do not purchase alcohol from illegal sources. If you doubt it works, look at Switzerland.

The worest part about all this, is that we needed until the 1990's to finally bring the Mafia under control. They where able to buy so much influence and power it took 70 years to bring them back down from the high ledge they achived. I'm affraid with all the money we have given Cartel's that it will take over 100 years to bring them back down.

Everyday we keep giving the Cartel's money, we condem our kids and grand kids to deal with our problem, by making it there's.

A president looking to make money for his people instead of criminals out of them which cost the people billions and cost countless lies. Catch up America prohibition did not work and the war on drugs in america has just made us a first world country with more of our people jailed and the war on drugs keeps going on and on and on and on.

Well, the man said it " all the money and technology received from the US has not diminished drug trafficking in the area". Did you tell your government they can spend your money in a foreign country like that? Call them up and tell them to stop this wasteful foolishness right now, or else.

Honestly this is the only way to stop all the violence in central and south america, we are tired of innocent people getting killed because of the drug cartel, it's time to legalize it and stop all this violence... I'm sure America won't be happy about this but I hope they legalize it so innocent people don't have to die anymore.

Look at the US now offering Guatemala money to fight drugs the DEA is so nervous about the world seeing the calm that will come when they make it all legal the DEA does not want this because they will go broke.

What a bold move ,show's how smart this guy is?Here in good ole USA.President O couldn't do this as the right wing fanatics, would then say "See elect a black and he legalizes Pot"Even though it would save millions $ and is needed to solve jail crowding.

I'm for legalize the drugs ... All the drug addicts will OD on cheap drugs and the world will be a better place !
    • Supream1  •  3 mths ago
Hmm good luck since biggest problem will be the drug cartel who will not want this Since if most drugs are made legal the cartel will lose money And so will the U.S Law enforcement people since US budget of anti drugs are in the billions about the same income as the cartel this will be an up hill battle

They wouldn't loose much money in Guatemala and it would provide a safe haven for their large drug stashes.
      • Paul 3 mths ago
Aaron he is pishing for legalization in the whole area not just his country. There would be no safe haven's under whta he is proposing, it would be legal. Only people losing money with his idea would be the Cartel's. Just like when we made alchol legal again the only ones that lost money was the rum runners.

Agree that the Cartel and gov't Police will be the big losers, getting their budgets cut and losing money as the cost of drugs drop! Who thought up this war on plants?, same ones who tried banning alcohol? another natural accuring substance. We are sheeple after all....

You can bet diplomats are en route with promises of weapons, cash and logistical support versus trade sanctions that will hurt his countries economy,,unless the profits from working with drugs instead of getting his people killed outweigh possible broken and often insufficient funding for continuing the war on drugs.

Should be interesting. By doing this it might cut all trade ties with America and maybe Europe also because of their broken treaties.

The war on drugs has been a complete failure, just like prohibition was a failure. If we locked up everyone in the US that has ever used, bought, or sold marijuana (or other illegal drugs), we would lose a large portion of our population (including politicians, priests, rich men, poor men, actors/& actresses, teachers, artists and authors, sports professions, business owners, as well as the losers in slum areas). If you have never tried any illegal substance, you are in the minority. If we include legal prescription drugs that were obtained without a prescription, even more people would suddenly become a criminal.

This whole thing is so out of control that it has become deadly ridiculoous.
      • Harry Kneecaps 3 mths ago
So? The world would be a better place if we locked up people like Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan.
      • Jesse G 3 mths ago
In what regard? Face it, they can always be used as examples of stupid behavior.

Who's footing the bill for all of this? An idea how much money and resources have been squandered? It makes me sick.

Guatemala here I come, I wouldn't suggest legalizing drugs like meth and coke but marijuana should be legalized and would help their economy. People dont understand that if the U.S. legalized marijuana we would be cutting the cartels income in half, thats their #1 cash crop. We would also save over 9 billion dollars of tax money each year thats spent on marijuana laws. We would save money that we spend on keeping people in jail for marijuana charges and we would make money selling it. But our government is ignorant and dont look at the facts.
