Guess Where Coca-Cola Is Investing $4 Billion

Who says American companies aren't investing? They are.  Billions, in fact. Only, they are just not investing here in the U.S.

Atlanta based Coca-Cola (KO) plans to invest $4 billion in China, the company's CEO Muhtar Kent told reporters in Shanghai this week. It's the company's biggest planned investment in China since the 2009 investment of $2 billion. The investments will start next year and is part of the company's China capex until 2014.

Kent said the company is even considering listing its shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, adding itself to the list of mainstream brands listing their depositary receipts on exchanges outside of their home base. Massachusetts luggage maker Samsonite opted to list in Hong Kong in the second quarter rather than do its initial public offering on the NYSE.  The new China investments will focus on innovation, infrastructure and expansion of its production capacity. The company now has six manufacturing centers in the country.

"U.S. corporations are actually in good shape and a lot of that is due to emerging markets, particularly the BRIC countries," fund manager Paul Dietrich of Foxhall Capital Management in Orange, Conn told Forbes on Friday. The BRIC countries are Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Low growth in the U.S. and Europe have essentially forced the hands of the big multinationals to look for growth elsewhere. "In this low growth environment, we will continue to see European and American multinational companies spending in countries far from home," says Martin Schulz, managing director of international equities at PNC Capital Advisors in Columbus, Ohio.

Thank god for those tax cuts. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to create jobs in China.

With all this investment and growth China will soon be the largest economy on earth. I'm sure that they will abide by the golden rule: He who has the gold makes the rules.

A few facts for a change: Coca-Cola is investing overseas because they've been making money at doing so since World War II. They've been in China since 1979. Coca-Cola built its first bottling plant in China in 1981. China is Coca-Cola's third-largest market after the United States and Mexico, and Coca-Cola has 60% of the Chinese soft drink market. The Chinese are currently buying 2 billion unit cases of Coca-Cola per year, which would be far too expensive to ship via container freight from the U.S. to China (not even counting inventory, damage, and overland transportation costs). Coca-Cola will use its investment to continue to take market share away from Chinese domestic soft drink manufacturers. Still want to boycott Coke?

buy American! Support American companies that extract billions and billions of dollars from overseas markets and bring it home! Or support overseas companies that extract billions and billions of dollars from America and send it overseas.

so the thumbs down is from foreigners or americans?

Not gonna buy Coke EVER again, nor Pepsi, I hear they are doing the same type thing as Coke.
      • Da'kine 9 mths ago
Becca are you retarded? Uhhhh, if you stop buying coke how will they create jobs HERE and supports the one they already have going? Its people like you that force companies to expand their markets outside of their current ones. Then people that don't buy their products complain about "jobs going overseas"(even though these "jobs" don't actually effect anything in the USA). Its a vicious cycle that plays out in the liberal mind(not always in reality). I am sorry, what was the question.....

Da'kine you don't make sense, and your statement that those jobs going overseas don't affect the USA, wellllll those jobs could be here instead... sighhh. I'm glad you're not a lib though lol.

da wake up folks that just one they printed look at your labels, car parts motor cycle parts over half or more are made outside of the USA Its a shame it took a toxic product like COKE to wake ya up! Annd dont forget food comes from other countries

........well, the US market is 'soft-drinks' saturated so cocoa cola is using its 'tax-breaks money to open shop in china, instead of investing in other products manufacturing here in the US to create jobs. Chinas strategy is to lure businesses to its country of cheap laborers, and then eventually taxed them into 'nationalization'. China knows how to exploit capitalism, and naive greedy capitalists.

Coke is expanding in China. That is to say it was/is already there. There are thousands of Coke employees in the U.S. at bottling locations throughout the US. You know who taught the Chinese to be "greedy capitalists?" The U.S. did.
      • Da'kine 9 mths ago
what "tax breaks money"? When did they get it? How much did they get?
    • cornelp  •  9 mths ago
Good. Turn the skinny small little chinese people into giant obese ones, where the drug companies can make more and more money...

      • Lois 9 mths ago
Donald.. I am an American.. I am a Christian and I buy Coke Products, but only because in China where people are becoming more financially able to buy products such as Coke... How smart is it to produce a product like cases of Soda and ship their to their destinations on the other side of the world. We need to be assured they are paying adequate taxes here in USA .. and you need to now who is advocating raising taxes on the wealthy and those kind of corporations.

    • Jim  •  9 mths ago
just a thought...Coke is an American company who is looking to invest 4 billion in china to produce an American product and make more money in another country, I can definatly understand that. But seeing how Coke is an Amercian Company, dont they care enough about American workers, that helped make them so big by buying their products. Why can Coke just invest their 4 billion into America by developing something new or getting into a new venture..so it helps American workers here so how Americans are the ones who helped make that company. Is that how coke thanks americans for buying their products?? They can Invest that money into something different here in the US to create jobs. WHY wouldnt they?? its all about the dollar and how much can be made at the cost of screwing the person who made you so big.
