Ohio school shooter confesses as death toll climbs

CHARDON, Ohio (Reuters) - The 17-year-old boy held in a shooting rampage at an Ohio high school has confessed to opening fire on fellow students he picked at random, prosecutors said on Tuesday, as two more teenagers died, bringing the death toll to three.

Prosecutors identified the shooter as T.J. Lane and said he has admitted to taking a knife and a .22-caliber pistol into the cafeteria at Chardon High School in a town 35 miles east of Cleveland on Monday and firing 10 rounds.

Students Demetrius Hewlin and Russell King Jr., 17, were both declared dead on Tuesday from wounds suffered in the incident, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's office. Another student, Daniel Parmertor, 16, died on Monday.

Prosecutors told a judge in Geauga County Juvenile Court that Lane told them he had selected his victims randomly. In his court appearance, Lane was ordered held in detention pending the filing of formal charges. The judge gave prosecutors until Thursday to file charges.

One student remained hospitalized with wounds from the attack while another was released from a hospital as the town prepared to hold a vigil to honor the victims later on Tuesday. At the high school, students spent the day huddling, talking and placing red ribbons around the grounds.

The incident marked the latest shooting at a U.S. school. The deadliest school shooting in the United States was a 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech University that left 33 people dead. The deadliest high school shooting claimed 12 students and a teacher in 1999 at Columbine High School in Colorado.

Chardon, the seat of Geauga County, is a semi-rural, affluent town with a population of about 5,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

    AUTOPSY RESULTS

Authorities said they expected to release the results of an autopsy on Parmertor later on Tuesday and said autopsies may be performed on Hewlin and King on Wednesday.

King had no brain activity when he arrived at MetroHealth Medical Center and was declared brain dead, the medical examiner's office said.

"We ask that Russell be remembered for who he was, a strong boy with a big heart. He will be missed by many. He was so full of life and we are honoring his wishes to help others by donating his organs," King's family said in a statement.

Hewlin's family confirmed his death in a statement saying: "Demetrius was a happy young man who loved life and his family and friends."

"We will miss him very much but we are proud that he will be able to help others through organ donation," it said.

Previously, students and local media had identified Lane as a student at a school for at-risk youth whose family said they were in shock over the events and asked for privacy.

"The family wanted me to convey to the citizens of Geauga County and Northeastern Ohio that the family is devastated by this most recent event," the Lane family's lawyer Bob Farinacci told local WKYC news prior to Tuesday's hearing.

"This is something that could never have been predicted. T.J.'s family has asked for some privacy while they try to understand how such a tragedy could have occurred and while they mourn this terrible loss for their community."

The school district was closed on Tuesday and will not reopen fully for classes until Friday.

Chardon schools Superintendent Joseph Bergant has praised the actions of teachers, who he said had acted quickly to protect the students.

Chardon Police Chief Tim McKenna did not disclose a motive on Tuesday for the shooting, which happened on Monday morning while students were studying and eating breakfast.

Some witnesses told local media he appeared to target a table where a student who had started dating his former girlfriend was seated with friends.

The Lane family's lawyer described the suspect as a "good kid" who had never been in trouble and had impressive grades.

"He's a sophomore. He's been doubling up on his classes with the intent of graduating this May. He pretty much sticks to himself but does have some friends and has never been in trouble over anything that we know about," Farinacci said.

Whoever the teacher was who had the cojones to chase an armed kid out of the school building after he had shot a bunch of other kids, that person deserves a medal for selfless heroism. Wow. Seriously, my hat's off to you, whoever you are. Even if the kid dropped the gun, how would you know he didn't have another one?

If you hear or see your child being cruel or mean.... NIP it in the bud. Teach your children to be kind to people that are different or struggling. Teach acceptance and compassion.
      • Claire 2 mths ago
And if your child misbehaves, punish them. Don't act like everything is ok until the eventually end up killing someone, and say "We never would have know!"

It is a very sad day in Ohio with these high school kids dying and the ones who are fighting for their lives in the hospitals. I was watching the news this morning and a young lady was interviewed and she stated all those who sat at that table were mean. I took her statement as these students shot were bullies or harassing other students. I saw that interview one time but it hasn't aired since. Our children today have no respect for their life or others. Some students can handle the harassment and just ignore it. But, as we have saw from the shooting in Ohio, some can not handle it and go to the extreme. Of course, the cause will be the video games etc. but we all know too well that is not true. I was a student who was harassed on a daily basis but ignored most of it till the other students couldn't leave my a lone. What did I do, the fists cane out and yes, a few times I got my rear kicked but the rest of the time the other student were laying on the ground. Our students these days are not allowed to have a fist fight...why not!!!! What is better a fist fight or gun battle with only one person having a gun. I will take a fist fight over a gun battle. Our government is partially to blame also. We as parents are told no spanking etc. and I feel that is totally wrong. A good spanking does not do anything but put our children on the right path. Our children today have no respect, values or morals. The shooter, had some serious problems with these students but I believe we will never get the true story.
      • lady 2 mths ago
It's not because parents are not spanking or that schools do not allow fist fights it's that they are just not giving or paying any attention.
      • Jesilyn 2 mths ago
School officials pay attention when they WANT to, but fail to act accordingly! Then they weasel themselves out of the hot seat by blaming a victimized person for defending them self! It's insane to think that you can refuse to protect a child and not expect them to eventually go off the deep end... OPEN YOUR EYES AMERICA....
      • justworking 2 mths ago
you got it. this is exactly right. they can say all they want and talk in circles, but his will happen again because those in power won't help the bullied kids. if you dont want to risk a bullet, stop bullying the other kids and have some respect.

Naturally, my sympathies are with the victims and their families. But it will be interesting to learn the psychology and motivation of the shooter. People can speculate all they like but it's far too soon to understand the "why" of this story. Why did the suspect choose those particular students? Without justifying his actions, it will be necessary to know if the student victims ever interacted with Lane and if so, how. It's difficult to believe Lane was deranged enough to select complete strangers as his targets. Again, time will tell the tale.
      • menykats 2 mths ago
@Rudolph: I read a report that said there is a "rumor" going around that town that the shooter went into the school cafeteria (the shooter did not attend this school) to seek out another boy (who died) who had started dating the shooter's ex-girlfriend. Then, after shooting him, he just started shooting the other kids around him.

In case you all haven't figured it out you, the problem is not bullying. Bullies have always been there. What's wrong today is nobody cares, nobody sees, nobody notices the kids who don't fit the mold, who don't know where they fit in, who they are or where they belong. Kids like that have always been bullied, but somebody, someone in their lives, always still cared. Today these kids are just invisible... at least until they have access to extreme ways of finally being noticed.

The victims didn't deserve to be injured or to die. The killings are just senseless. Let' s hope this does not happen at another school. The school environment is just too violent these days.

I picked up my 15 year old from school yesterday, and the line was huge. It amazes me how many parents just wanted to get their babies home. I get off work at 3, but if I had to work later, I would have told my boss...I'm picking up my kid today, and don't you tell me no.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  2 mths ago
you want to stop this then stop bullying...period!! The way I see it is you have 2 choices: either STOP your kid from picking on others or teach them how to duck and weave! This type of reaction is tragic and sad BUT you have to expect some sort of reaction--as bad as it may be!! This is the act of a desperate kid who was PUSHED to this...sad--

I dont get it. Years ago kids were bullied and they didnt all of a sudden snap and start killing like this!!!!!! What is going on with the youth today??? What makes them want to kill so easily?

The shooter attended a school for at-risk students. He lived with his grandparents and sister rather than with his parents. There are WAY too many things we do not know yet; despite his alleged high grades, students do not attent such schools unless there IS a risk, despite the family's denials of any past problems.
    • Sean  •  2 mths ago
I know it seems like the world is so much more violent today than in the past, but remember the news media gives us a constant feed of information unlike in the past.

Sometimes I wish we didn't have to hear about these things, the world is and always has been a dark place. It's too bad we can't just live without hurting each other.

Really sad situation. My heart goes out to the victims...All the victims including the shooter. The day before this happened I was researching the effects that prescription drugs have on children. You can learn about it on YouTube - Michael Moore Reveals The Real Cause Of Columbine and Drugging Our Children are two to watch. I can't help but wonder if prescription drugs contributed to this situation. It blows me away to see the how commentators here once again turn a tragedy into politics. Are people really that hateful and divided and blinded. It's pure ignorance. I fear that it is a true reflection of society today. This is not about the NRA or the Tea Party or Republicans vs Democrats. It's also not a reality show. It is so disrespecful to make such comments.
    • Brian  •  2 mths ago
The Lane family's lawyer described the suspect as a "good kid" who had never been in trouble and had impressive grades.

Ok, so why was he at the high school with a gun? If he was such a good kid, why was he considered 'at risk' and going to a school specifically for those types of students? The Lane's lawyer is lying thru his teeth. Shouldn't come as much of a surprise though I suppose.
    • b  •  Richmond, Virginia  •  2 mths ago
the question.....why did this kid....or any kid....have access to a handgun, with out adult knowledge and supervision. and someone who is "at risk" to boot. Yeah, I have nothing against "sane" people owning handguns or any other type of weapon including assault rifles......its all the crazy folks, I'm worried about. And this #$%$ about needing one for protect yourself, it all gets down to who shoots first....and the one who is nuts is gonna be it, that includes most criminals too.....
