    Gunmen abduct Pakistani counter-terror official

    ISLAMABAD (AP) — A Pakistani security official says gunmen have kidnapped a retired army brigadier who was working on a contract with the country's intelligence agency.

    Another official with the police says the abduction took place on the outskirts of the capital Islamabad on Thursday, shortly after the officer left his home for work. The police official says the officer's driver resisted and was shot and killed.

    Both officials spoke on condition anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. They requested the kidnapped officer's name be withheld because his safety could be compromised if it was revealed.

    The retired officer was working for the Inter-Services Intelligence. The security official suggested he was working on a counter-terrorism assignment but would not disclose the exact nature of the job.
