Gunmen Attack Airport and State TV In DRC

Kinshasa – Gunmen attacked the international airport, and seized the state television station in the country’s capital, Kinshasa, on Monday

Two of the gunmen delivered a message against Congolese President, Joseph Kabila’s government before shutting down transmission at the station.

“Gideon Mukungubila has come to free you from the slavery of the Rwandan,” Al-Jazeera quoted one of the gunmen in the video as saying.

Mukungubila is a religious leader who ran for presidency against Kabila in 2006. Mukungubila reportedly refers to himself as “The prophet of the Lord”. Police cordoned off the area around the station building where the gunmen reportedly took several people hostage.

“They are armed with machetes and guns. They have taken reporters hostage. An operation is under way to dislodge them,” Al-Jazeera quoted police spokesperson, Mwana Mputu, as saying.

Meanwhile, a customs official at Kinshasa’s International Airport said heavy gunfire started in the building just after the state television station was seized.

“Shooting has just started here. They are shooting everywhere. We are all hiding,” Al-Jazeera quoted the official as saying.
