Guyana police: 2 dead in apparent murder-suicide

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — Authorities in the South American country of Guyana say a businessman in a remote gold mining community apparently fatally shot his wife before turning the gun on himself.

Police spokesman Ivelaw Whittaker says 62-year-old Victor Pires appears to have shot and killed his 39-year-old wife early Monday in their home in the northwestern jungle area of Port Kaituma. Pires then fatally shot himself. The community is near Guyana's border with Venezuela.

The apparent murder-suicide comes a month after another businessman from the same mining area was held on suspicion of killing his wife and four of his five children by locking them inside their home and setting it on fire.
