The greenhouse effect has been accepted science for over a century.

Fourier calculates colder earth without an atmosphere (1824)

Tyndall discovers relationship between CO2 and long-wave radiation (1859)

Arrhenius calculates global warming from anthropogenic CO2 (1896)

Chamberlin models global carbon exchange including feedbacks (1897)

Callendar predicts global warming increase catalysed by CO2 emissions (1938)

Revelle predicts inability of oceans to sequester anthropogenic CO2 (1958)

from "The Discovery of Global Warming" by Spencer Weart

the greenhouse gas effect was first proposed by Joseph Fourier in 1824, proven to exist by John Tyndall in 1858, and was first quantified by Svante Arrhenius ~1896.

Arrhnenius' estimate, for how much warming to expect from a doubling of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, was very close to today's estimates, which have 100 more years of research to rely on.

But for Rush Limbaugh and the Republicans and tea baggers, Global Warming is just an agenda cooked up by Al Gore and other liberals.
      • geniusandinsanitywalkdown ... 4 mths ago
There are many greenhouse gases....but the alarmists only want you to worry about the one that is least polluting........Nox and Sox are far worse than CO2 (the alarmists count on your ignorance)

        Easily Offended
I say what you say is nuts. CO2, Methane, and yes Nitrous and Sulfuric Oxides, are all studied. The problem is that of these, CO2 is clearly increasing the most. It is the CHANGE in effect and NOT its relative magnitude that is important.
      • Matthew 4 mths ago
Knaug60 - Whay is the math formula that demonstrates your point? We are talking science; how are you determine the change and effect?

trying to get the elites head out of their dark place and do something to improve energy before it is too late is the hard part. even with the economy low, it does not have to take millions. cutting the subsidies to oil companies whose profits are obscene would be a good step. this could be funnelled into alternative sources. solar,geothermal...are worthwhile.
      • Lephrechan 4 mths ago
yeah right..dream on...solar when the sun is out ....ever winter in chicago when we go for days without sun...the money to retro fit will not be feasible...we need cooling in the summer..like we had two summers ago...kill the epa save BILLIONS!!!
    • Thomas M  •  4 mths ago
I have yet to find a scientific article which spells out exactly what the human race must do to avoid this global climate change. Do we go back to riding horses, or living in caves.....just what the hell is their solution!!!???
      • derek 4 mths ago
You are close. They hope to bring us back to the 19th Century, before the widespread use of the internal combustion engine.
      • Richard 4 mths ago
You just haven't spent enough time reading about the subject.

Look up Introduction to Core Climate Solutions at Climate Progress website
      • Thomas M 4 mths ago
Climate Progress organization is just another Soros funded goofball theory collection. They propose going total electric in transportation but don't explain how we're gonna be able to recharge 100 million+ vehicles without having "green" technology in place in the energy industry. Like I said they have many more criticisms than solution. No credibility
    • Marc G  •  4 mths ago
Climate change has been perhaps the one constant in Earth's history. It isn't news, and it isn't to be feared, commie libs.
      • geniusandinsanitywalkdown ... 4 mths ago
I think if a catastrophe was genuinely global in scope, catastrophic in outcome and IMMINENT (right around the corner, unavoidable), that 100% of naitons would need to help solve the problem (even beggar nations that constantly have their hands otu begging for food, medicine, money, etc, etc, etc).
        .
How do I know this poroblem is not immiment? NOT global and NOT Catastrphic?
        .
Cuz they wanted 80% of the world to have no requirements (only 20% of the world to fix a global, catastrophic and imminent problem? I think they just wanted our money (and any excuse was good for them) and a plan to take our money while they do nothign was easy for them to say 'yes' to it

      scientists=thieves with a diploma.
Deserts used to be oceans millions of years ago.
By the way,who can manipulate the clime even if we stop all activities at once????show me and i may believe, and only then maybe.
      • geniusandinsanitywalkdown ... 4 mths ago
They found as many as 50 SCIENTISTS in New Hampshire? How many of those were SOCIAL scientists, not physical sciences?
      • Lephrechan 4 mths ago
        frank..thats to logical for them!!!!
      • knaug60 4 mths ago
Then you are a thief WITHOUT a diploma?
    • Ginger  •  4 mths ago
The climate is always changing. The glaciers melt, the oceans rise. The glaciers grow, the oceans shrink. This is normal behaviour for the planet Earth. Nobody is denying that. "Climate change denial" is one of those leftist buzzwords for those who don't want to go along with the Liberals half-baked ideas on what needs to be done about it. We need real solutions for real problems, not empty rhetoric and name-calling.
    • Looey  •  4 mths ago
On Climate Change.. The climate cycles are in a natural and normal upward rise, part of the cycles that ice deposit analysis shows has been going on for millions of years! Unless Obama moves the North Pole out of the Arctic ocean, they will continue; it is a physical event, and Obama cannot change the laws of Physics OR the location of the poles!

This was all analyzed by early computer work, and so far nobody I have seen has refuted the basic computer studies that show why we have the regular cycles of hot and cold weather the ice records have shown!

Our politically-oriented scientists ignore the basic periodicity and make it seem like this is a new thing and we have to prevent it, when it has been going on for millions of years!

Actually, we know that Iceland grew great crops before the cold period moved in. Is this not a part of History? Greenland had huge forests thousands of years ago; look it up!

If Greenland had forests, the climate must have been much warmer than today, and Polar Bears are still around!! So are people!

But trace the flow of money through Politicians, and you will get some concepts on what is really going on!

    • Christopher  •  New Orleans, Louisiana  •  4 mths ago
We are at the tail end of an ice age. We know that the Earth warms and heats in cycles from ice cores samples taken in the Antartic. Mars is getting warmer along with the rest of the Solar System. How much research funding has been spent to determine the impact all of this cyclical activity. Our "greenhouse gas" emissions can't be the cause of Mars' recent warming can it??
    • A Yahoo! User  •  Kansas City, Missouri  •  4 mths ago
I get a kick out of all you global warmers.. You cry about it while you are running your dish washer with you heat set a 75 and you get in your cars to do what ever. Turn your heat off catch your water from the rain. get on your bike and shut up
    • Lephrechan  •  Romeoville, Illinois  •  4 mths ago
an old man said,"still gets cold and snows in the winter...still warms up and plants grow in the spring...gets hot in the summer..gets cooler and the leaves fall in the fall.....and i thought cool!!!!! forgot to ask if he had a degree!!!!!!

It is transparently obvious to what lengths the tobacco industry went to hide, deny and play down the dangers of cigarette smoke, yet deniers can't seem to imagine the same kind of agenda when it comes to the fossil fuel industry, which has an even larger financial stake in denying scientific evidence. The fossil fuel industry makes the tobacco industry look like a mom and pop grocery store by comparison. It's the biggest economic enterprise in the history of the world. And it isn't going to give up easy.

Can you say gullible and ideologically blinded?
    • brad  •  St Louis, Missouri  •  4 mths ago
Of course climate change is real. Do these people believe the Earth is always 72 degrees. Mother nature will change whenever she wishes. There is not a dam thing humans can do about it.
    • Yornik  •  Burbank, California  •  4 mths ago
Let's look at the motives of the two groups involved in this dispute. Group #1 -- Thousands of Climate Scientists all over the world who agree that humans are causing global warming. What would their motive be for lying? I suppose more grant money for their studies? Group #2 -- Oil Company Executives and the politicians who are in their pockets. What would their motivation be for lying? Ummm, making millions of dollars. Who do you think is lying? I'm guessing the oil company executives. Global warming is man made. Why are you believing the oil company executives? Do you really think they have your best interest at heart?
    • Eric T  •  4 mths ago
We should really be quite concerned with a .5 degree change so much that we should ruin yet another 10 million jobs, and further the gap between the middle class and upper class.

Lets try to change something that is not real to bring forward more pain for the people, because 50 people not any better than anyone else THINKS it is worth it.

Do you like Anthony Watts of Watts Up With That - "popular skeptic website)?

      Here's how Watts operates.

Watts and D'Aleo make it all up with this claim

"NO WARMING TREND IN THE 351-YEAR CENTRAL ENGLAND TEMPERATURE RECORD"

Long story short, Anthony Watts (of Watts Up With That) and D'Aleo left out the 19th century and only used summer data, leaving out winter data, to arrive at their quackery graph. Of course summers in the period were relatively cool, while winters were relatively warm. Even for skeptics, this one takes the cake for cherry picking.

and they get their heads handed to them by Tamino at Open Mind blog. Tamino is a world class time series analyst, who is very knowledgeable about climate science. He regularly debunks the nonsense posted by Watts. Unfortunately, the public doesn't see much of that, as it never makes it into the mainstream media. But the junk sure does. The real science doesn't have the massive PR campaign to counter it.
    • Richard  •  4 mths ago
Here's how vested interests, like the fossil fuel industry, keep up the facade of fake climate change skepticism. This is one of the biggest disinformation campaigns in history.
They spread their disinformation through these groups, who also hide the money trail, - 'wipe the oil' off the money.

These 32 organizations have all been involved in the tobacco industry's campaign to deny the science showing the dangers of tobacco.

They are all now involved in the campaign to deny the science of climate change.

Acidification of the oceans, as a result of the excess CO2 emitted by humans, is the evil twin sister of global warming. When CO2 disolves in seawater, carbonic acid is formed. Shellfish and coral need calcium carbonite to make their shells. Calcium carbonate is alkaline, the opposite of acid.

Not only do the coral and the shellfish we are familiar with depend on a certain pH level in seawater, so do coccolithophores, tiny plankton that are armored with calcium carbonate shells, just like the more familiar shellfish. Except these little guys are critical to a balance in the carbon cycle, that has supported life as we know it for hundreds of millions of years. And besides that, they are the very bottom of the food chain that all other sea life depends on.

They cannot survive in acidic water, because they can't form their alkaline shells. And they are one of the biggest carbon sinks on earth. Their shells eventually fall to the bottom of the deep sea, locking carbon, in the form of calcium carbonate, out of the carbon cycle, and thereby helping keep the cycle in a balance that has supported life as we know it.

And those "scientific conferences" with hundreds of skeptics? These aren't real scientific conferences, they are propaganda events. They are hosted by right wing propaganda mills like the Heartland Institute and the American Enterprise Institute, who offered $1,000 per speech and $10,000 per manuscript to skeptical scientists. The Heartland Insitute is largley funded by Exxon/Mobile. These are both right wing propaganda mills, and are definitely not scientific organizations
