Handful of Occupy Wall Street Camps Staring Down Eviction

Anti-corporation demonstrators ignored an order to evacuate their encampment outside Oakland, Calif., city hall, continuing to occupy Frank Ogawa Plaza overnight and going about their business as usual this morning.

Music blared and dozens of more tents were erected in the encampment Friday night. It was hardly the scene one would have expected after city officials issued an order that protesters were to vacate the plaza by 10 p.m.

"We're here to address the issues that have been raised in terms of public health and safety -- graffiti, urination, vandalism and making specific requests as to what the need to do as to address those issues," Oakland city spokeswoman Karen Boyd told ABC News station KGO-TV in San Francisco.

Boyd said demonstrators were welcome to protest in the plaza between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., but no later.

Despite the demonstrators' violation of the order to leave the park, there was no sign of an increased police presence.

"We've known from the beginning that this is an illegal occupation in the eyes of the city," protester Ali Hakimi told the San Francisco Chronicle. "We're just taking it day by day. We're consumed with people being fed, that they're safe, and outside of that, I don't know how far ahead we're thinking."

The problem of pending eviction isn't unique to Oakland.

Eleven protesters in San Jose, Calif., were arrested after occupying an area near city hall for nearly four weeks.

According to Occupy Together, an online group that seeks to streamline communication between all the Occupy demonstration encampments, protesters in Vancouver, British Columbia, are also facing legal pressure to vacate their tent city, which is on the lawn of an art gallery.

And in Melbourne, Australia, 100 protesters were arrested after defying an order to leave the plaza they had been occupying.

Protesters said they will suspend their occupation until further notice, according to ABC News Australia.

In London, protesters are grappling with whether to leave their post outside St. Paul's Cathedral after the famous tourist spot was shut down for the first time since World War II, due to safety concerns.

The dean of St. Paul's initially said he would not make the protesters leave, but many sightseers were angry that they couldn't see the cathedral because of the size of the tent city, which has grown exponentially since it was set up a week ago.

"We are very disappointed, because it's the second day we tried to see St. Paul's Cathedral," a tourist told ABC News Radio. "It's a very important point in London."

Protesters said they will gather for a vote Sunday about whether to leave the space.

In New York, denizens of Zuccotti Park made space for families to spend Friday night camped out as part of the first-ever Occupy Wall Street family sleepover.

The event included pizza, a sing-along and a bedtime story.

But the families' restful night was interrupted early Saturday morning when Dylan Farenhorst Spaelstra, 21, scaled the park's 70-foot-tall sculpture, refusing to come down until Mayor Michael Bloomberg resigned.

"This movement means people take action in different ways. There's certainly respect for different tactics," Occupy Wall Street spokesman Bil lDobbs said. "But as you can see, we've been going out very simply marching over the past month."

And more marching is what's in store for the residents of Zuccotti Park and their compatriots in other cities. They'll be joining movements across the country to participate in the 16th National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality.

The Occuppy Wall Street movement, which began in New York City on Sept. 17 to protest corporate greed, has spread to more than 1,500 cities to date.

How about Yahoo getting rid of these #$%$ "Location" pop up!!!!!
      • Nunya Biznez 7 mths ago
agreed. My person feeling on that is they are being pressured to track the bloggers by location, thus making it much easier for them to be found should they say something "treasonous"...
      • G M 7 mths ago
@Thomas Miday, the American government would never do anything like that, would it?
      • MICHAEL 7 mths ago
Click the frickin' 'show location' check box, it goes away. Did mine initally, it never came back. Get real, it's not the Yahoo 'government spy in the sky'.
    • Aduzi  •  7 mths ago
Occupy the Internet. But do it with class, no name calling, no foul language, be adults, childish ways are for those without standards. Use facts, not lies, rumors, gossip, innuendos, etc... Hope this helps
      • Hoochie 7 mths ago
Great post, Aduzi. Some tax reform proposals are going in the wrong direction. We can review current bills in congress at govtrack dot us and cast our vote.

Congress argues against extending a payroll tax cut for workers & employers but there is bipartisan support for a tax break to corps for foreign earnings. HR1834 & S1671

The 2004 repatriated tax failed to increase U.S. jobs. After repatriating $155 billion, the top 15 repatriating firms reduced their overall U.S. workforce nearly 21,000; did not increase R&D; & overall the 19 surveyed corps more than doubled their avg stock repurchases, from about $2.2 billion in 2004 to $5.3 billion in 2007.

The pay of the top five execs at the top 15 repatriating ... corps jumped 27% from 2004 to 2005, & 30% from 2005 to 2006 while worker pay increased 3% & 11%.

The argument is a corp tax break will create jobs. The argument is letting taxpayers keep more dollars won't create additional demand and therefore jobs. I don't agree with either argument. Whatever your opinion on these bills, you can vote now!

Rile them up, create an "ANTI-" feeling that makes people want to be defiant and even start fights. That is a measure of good leadership.

Ohhh, wait. Lets go protest the republicans right to have an convention. Then we can start fist fights and maybe even plan some terrorist acts. Must be because no one protests the democrats right to convention, that they are the better species.

Maybe if we listen to these people we can find some answers, like money is evil,.. but I'm sure we won't know things are better till obama tells us it's better. 3.5% more people have health care then before. Seems that it was life altering like he promiced. Up to a 30% raise in health insurance rates. Maybe because Obama didn't want to put a cap on law suits for doctors mistakes. Or Obama didn't want to say that 800$ for an ambulanse ride isn't extortion.

But what else has Obama done. A stimulus bill that cost $280,000 per job saved or created. Seems like americans got a raise in a ressession. about $100,000 a year for two years.

But maybe he did good somewhere else. Like creating a feeling of racism when debating illegal imigrants verses legal imigrants. Telling people that if they check the validity of a mexians ID that they are racist. But checking to see if suzie q is useing her sisters ID to get into a bar at 18, while at college... That would be profiling college students??? If someone doesn't have a state ID, then maybe it's a sign that they are illegal imigrants, not the fact that they don't speak english to boot. No common sense alloud.

Maybe Obama is going to get it right with wall street though.

At least corperations are strong enough to stand up against government. Corperations may be too big to listen to it's employees. But so is government. Unions may be too big to care if you are christian or republican,.. and pay off anti-christian democrats with your money anyways... but the government is too big to care about that injustice. Getting rid of corperations only ensures that only big government has that much power. And that is what they really want. And getting rid of tax breaks for donations ensures that government is the only source of aide (which obama wants to do). If a church runs a homeless shelter,.. verses if the government does it at the cost of $1500 a month, a person, and still gets underqualified people to run it... well that is just the nature of the beast.

Government handouts to profitable (or failing) corporations is NOT capitalism.
      • The OldDog 7 mths ago
You #$%$ fools should have told that to Obama before he handed out 787 billion in his first failed stimulus plan.
      • MARK W 7 mths ago
The teaparty tried to tell that to Obama, but he wouldn't listen. I know,I know, Bush did the first bailout and that was wrong too. I'm with you.
      • Bob 7 mths ago
Bush did one and Obama has done all the rest, infact half of the first bailout was left for use by President Obama and not used by Bush. The bailouts have been almost purely Democrats yet the protesteers still cry about the TEA Party (against the bailouts) and the DRepublicans (who were against them). Een the original bailout was opposed by Republicans in Congress and passed because the majority party (Democrats) supported them.
    • T  •  7 mths ago
We have not had capitalism in your lifetime or mine. Capitalism lets failing businesses die. Remember the 80s? Chrystler bailouts? Airline bailouts? Remember 3 years ago? Bank bailouts? Insurance bailouts? That is NOT capitalism.
      • A M S 7 mths ago
        You are so right!!!!!!!
      • Herman 7 mths ago
Bailouts are Socialism for Capitalists! If they find another way to screw us they will
      • John 7 mths ago
Why the Republican, Democrat & Independent Congress approved the Bailout like (TARP)?
    • Rick  •  7 mths ago
The goverment will bail out everyone but you.
    • T  •  7 mths ago
If you really believe that capitalism = success through hard work you cannot justify bailing out banks that failed because the executives made bad decision. Stop rewarding failure.

Our government has been playing on the ignorance and apathy of "the people" for decades; slowly degrading our standard of living, now at the expense of our children and grandchildren. Some generation is going to have to bite the big one and some "leader" is going to have to make the hard decision to put the true recovery in motion.

It's obvious that Americans very freedom is at stake. Congress is at fault for making stupid, bought, decisions. But we as Citizens are at fault for allowing them to continue to do so.VOTE!

The problem is Government. Fix that and the other crap will be fixed. Stay with it and vote the run of the mill Politicians out. Lose Big Government and let's get the ones that Really are Public servants, though making a good salary, that are on our side in Office. That salary plus their pension and the benefits are enough. We don't want or need the corruption and they don't need it either. Government gets paid enough. The long term benefits, if not the desire to get AMERICA BACK ON TRACK, should be plenty reason to get in Office and they should feel ashamed of themselves (those that do this), for trying to rape the Tax payers, and yes I mean TAX PAYERS! Those that are true to AMERICA have reason to hold their heads up.
