"The Hangover Part II" box office has already been impressive, passing $100 million in its first four days. Through its opening weekend, the film has already brought in an estimated $118 million. That's a pretty good haul for the first portion of the Memorial Day weekend, and should allow the movie a huge haul during its run in theaters.
According to Box Office Mojo, it was a pretty good weekend in theaters for three films, all of which are sequels. For the weekend of May 27-29, "The Hangover Part II" earned $86.5 million, "Kung Fu Panda 2" earned $48 million, and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" brought in another $39.3 million. Those are all early estimates from the theaters, so it could be a few days before the exact numbers are reported.
For "Pirates of the Caribbean," that is a very large drop-off from its opening weekend, even though $39.3 million at the box office is no small feat in a second week of release. The film has now earned about $152.9 million in the domestic box office alone, reportedly earning more than $600 million in worldwide revenue already. That will certainly rank it among the best films (in performance) that have ever come into movie theaters.
In its third week, "Bridesmaids" brought in another $16.6 million, pushing its total above $85 million over that span. For a film that reportedly cost only $32.5 million to produce, that is a huge profit margin. It has already created rumors that a sequel will be on the way soon, and it seems like something that would work pretty well.
Rounding out the top of the box office was "Thor" with another $9.4 million and "Fast Five" with another $6.4 million. That makes almost $160 million during four weeks for "Thor" and an amazing haul of just under $196 million for "Fast Five" during five weeks. It seems like both films are destined to pass the $200 million mark before the summer film season comes to an end.
This year's summer films have already been creating quite a bit of money, but there are still quite a few movies left to debut this summer that could really put a dent at the top of the charts. "X-Men: First Class" will come out Friday, and then "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" will still be coming out in July. They will set the bar that "Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1" will try to catch this winter.
