Hard-line Indonesian police shave punkers' mohawks

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) — Police in Indonesia's most conservative province raided a punk-rock concert and detained 65 fans, buzzing off their spiky mohawks and stripping away body piercings because of the perceived threat to Islamic values.

Dog-collar necklaces and chains also were taken from the youths before they were thrown in pools of water for "spiritual" cleansing, local police chief Iskandar Hasan said Wednesday.

After replacing their "disgusting" clothes, he handed each a toothbrush and barked "use it."

The crackdown marked the latest effort by authorities to promote strict moral values in Aceh, the only province in this secular but predominantly Muslim nation of 240 million to have imposed Islamic laws.

Here, adultery is punishable by stoning to death. Homosexuals have been thrown in jail or lashed in public with rattan canes. Women are forced to wear headscarves and told, please, no tight pants.

It's not clear why police decided to hone in on punks.

Though pierced and tattooed teens have complained for months about harassment, Saturday's roundup at a concert attended by more than 100 people was by far the biggest and most dramatic bust yet.

Baton-wielding police scattered fans, many of whom had traveled from other parts of the sprawling archipelagic nation to attend the show.

Hasan said 59 young men and five women were loaded into vans and brought to a police detention center 30 miles (60 kilometers) from the provincial capital, Banda Aceh.

They would spend 10 days getting rehabilitation, training in military-style discipline and religious classes, including Quran recitation, he said. Afterward, they'll be sent home.

    Twenty-year-old punker, Fauzan, was mortified.

"Why? Why my hair?!" he said, pointing to his cleanly shaven head. "We didn't hurt anyone. This is how we've chosen to express ourselves. Why are they treating us like criminals?"

The women, some in tears, were given short, blunt bobs.

Hasan insisted he'd done nothing wrong.

"We're not torturing anyone," the police chief said. "We're not violating human rights. We're just trying to put them back on the right moral path."

However, Nur Kholis, a national human commissioner, deplored the detentions, saying police have to explain what kinds of criminal laws have been broken.

"Otherwise, they violated people's right of gathering and expression," Kholis said, promising to investigate.

Aceh — where Islam first arrived in Indonesia from Saudi Arabia centuries ago — enjoys semiautonomy from the central government.

That was part of a peace deal negotiated after the 2004 tsunami that killed 170,000 people in the province convinced both separatist rebels and the army to lay down their arms. Neither side wanted to add to people's suffering.

Some local governments in other parts of the country — which has seen tremendous changes with lighting-speed economic growth and modernization since the ouster of longtime dictator Suharto one decade ago — also have tried to ban "immoral" behavior, like drinking alcohol, gambling and kissing in public.

They've met with limited success, however, largely because most of the country's 200 million Muslims practice moderate forms of the faith.

As the late Christopher Hitchens said, RELIGION POISONS EVERYTHING. Religion could not survive this unless it controls its followers. It does this by lying to them, misleading them, scaring or threatening them and doing its best to make sure the people never become smart enough to realize what they been following has been a myth. This holds true with all religions. It's just that some are more desperate than others and use harsher means. Ultimately though, religion needs to control their followers by keeping them stupid and uneducated. It needs to make them follow the rules just because they said so. This haircutting is just another example of control. Allowing the general population to become educated freethinkers and base their decisions on evidence and reality would not bode well for the organized religions that were based on mythology and nonexistent supernatural beings.

It's not religion, it's man using anything at his disposal to control another. Take ATHEIST China for example.

Somehow, religion balances humanity- if all human beings are Atheist i bet we're all dead."the beginning of someone's RIGHT is the end of somebody's RIGHT".

And why wouldn't you think the other way, too? Christopher Hitchens has poisoned you :)

Every totalitarian government since the beginning of recorded history has always eventually fallen. Islam is looking more like Nazism than a peaceful religion. Hopefully Islam will also become unpopular once people become wise and enlightened. . . .

The problem is that so much of humanity is desperately poor, uneducated and ignorant of other cultures that Islam finds fertile ground with them. These people of limited intelligence are easy to manipulate and are willing minions of Islam. Beheadings, acid thrown in girls faces, brides being burnt to death, suicide bombers, suicide airliners, women kept under blue bedsheets with eye-holes so they dont walk into walls....All done by ignorant people.

        What can address perpetual brainwashing?

That is how religions thrive. Even easy-billion-dollar media christian evangelism benefits from this technique, and the poor or uneducated or ignorant are the herds of sheep who are lead to deception.

What can bring a deceived person to the truth? Doubt? Rebellion?

Being brought to the right moral path by another individual is tough if not coming from oneself. Osama, i suppose was promised like most professing his faith 72 vestal virgins when he dies. and these kids know better than that.it is deception big time. too bad for Osama expecting 72 virgins. turns out to be 72 year old virgin.

What see as wrong doesn't matter. It's the law in their Province. Maybe they should not have allowed the concert in the first place.
      • sonny 5 mths ago
Correct! It's simply an act of deception. Allowing the concert only to attack the crowd. Shameful!

What didn't come up in this news is that the event organizer manipulated the proposal to the authority.

Religious people tend to believe that God has vested them with powers to impose their will and morals on other people.

Religion is the version of politics in faith. who is more right than who, who has more cred? Anyone who tells you who to believe and how is a politician of religion. The gods of this planet do are not LOVE as being preached by their followers. It is a conditional love that their gods preach. Jesus, Allah, Baal, Buddha, Odin, Elmo...all of it is crap. People needed their lives to be more meaningful, so they made up stuff then we get people burning withces, crusades and office buildings being destroyed with bombs and planes.

you simply missed the basic concept of a religion :)

This is why Indonesia is still so backward after so many decades despite having abundance of land, natural resources and manpower. They waste so much time and manpower on trying to uphold so-called moral values when the politicians and the police themselves are so corrupted and so low in moral value. The only reason that seems good to themselves is they can shift the attention to the people so that they can carry on with their misdeeds. My sympathy to the middle and lower classes of citizens in Indonesia.
