Harley-Davidson 2Q profit up 30 pct on US demand

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Harley-Davidson Inc. said Wednesday that its second-quarter net income jumped 30 percent, as demand for its motorcycles continued to grow both at home and abroad.

But the Milwaukee-based company's revenue for the quarter fell short of expectations, as warmer-than-usual weather in the first quarter of the year that pulled forward some second-quarter sales. Lower European demand also reduced sales.

"We continue to remain cautious in our expectations for retail sales globally in an environment of greater economic uncertainty, including in Europe where sales are clearly being affected by the challenging Eurozone economy," Keith Wandell, Harley's chairman, president and CEO, said in a statement.

Its shares fell more than 3 percent in morning trading.

Harley reported net income of $247.3 million, or $1.07 per share, for the three months ended July 1. That's up from $190.6 million, or 81 cents per share, a year ago. Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of $1.05 per share.

Revenue jumped 17 percent to $1.57 billion from $1.34 billion a year earlier. Analysts expected $1.64 billion.

By volume, worldwide retail sales of new bikes rose 2.8 percent, while U.S. unit sales increased 4 percent. Asia Pacific sales rose 10 percent and Latin America sales jumped 38 percent, but sales fell a combined 6.4 percent in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The company said it still plans to ship 245,000 to 250,000 bikes to dealers this year, which would amount to an increase of 5 percent to 7 percent over year-ago levels.

For the third-quarter, Harley said it expects shipments to total between 51,000 to 56,000, which would amount to a drop of 9.3 percent to 17.4 percent from year-ago levels, mainly as a result of production changes at one of its major plants.

Harley shares fell $1.50, or 3.5 percent, to $41.73 in heavy morning trading, after initially tumbling to $37.84 shortly after the market opened.

Over the past 52 weeks, the motorcycle maker's shares have traded between $31.50 and $54.32. The shares have risen about 11 percent since the beginning of this year, but have lost about 19 percent of their value over the past three months.
