'Harry Potter' conjures first-day record of $92.1M

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Harry Potter has cast his biggest spell yet with a record-breaking first day at the box office for his final film.

Distributor Warner Bros. reports that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" summoned up $92.1 million domestically on opening day Friday.

That's nearly $20 million more than the previous record-holder, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which took in $72.7 million in its first day two years ago.

The film added $75 million in 57 overseas countries Friday, raising its international total to $157.5 million since it began rolling out Wednesday. That gives the film a worldwide total of about $250 million.

Among its first-day totals Friday was $14.8 million in Great Britain, which Warner Bros. reported was the biggest single day ever for a movie.

The first 3-D film in the series, "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" benefited from the higher price theaters charge for 3-D tickets, which cost a few dollars more than 2-D.

In a single day, "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" took in more money than four of the previous seven "Harry Potter" films did over their entire opening weekends.

The finale of the "Harry Potter" saga also set a record for midnight screenings with $43.5 million. That topped "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," which pulled in about $30 million in its first midnight shows last year.

Box-office tracker Hollywood.com projected Saturday that "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" also could break the opening-weekend record of $158.4 million domestically held by "The Dark Knight."

I grew up with HP, and it's so sad to finally see it come to an end. I drove 5 hours back to my hometown to see it with a friend, who I had seen other midnight showings and gone to the midnight book releases with (couldn't break the tradition). I'll never forget how the audience cheered, cried, and laughed together. It was the most amazing feeling I've ever had in a movie theatre....EVER! I've already seen it three times this weekend.....great movie, definitely my favorite of the movies.

although I was a little disappointed they took out Harry using the Cruciatus curse on Carrow for spitting in McGonagall's face. It was one of my favorite parts of the book....I'd been waiting for him to do that. Somehow I knew they'd leave it out

Going to see on Sunday. Was it worth it to see in 3-D? Still trying to decide what format to watch it in.

        3-d costs more?

I thought it was great without 3-d

Yes, 3-D costs more, and--quite honestly (and as I already commented to my daughter)--the film itself was produced so well, and the 3-D is so subtle, that it would be just as enjoyable without it. There was, however, one very nice effect, and I don't want to ruin the movie for you by spelling it out. Enjoy!!! :-)

Okay. I've just GOT to say something that's been bugging me for a couple of years now: Why do the powers that be say how much a movie grosses on opening weekend? Why don't they just say how many people went to so it?? Of COURSE these movies are breaking "box office records".
Hasn't anyone but me seen the amount they charge for tickets nowadays? Plus they have the 3-D price on top. I would MUCH rather know how many people went, than how much money was grossed. Everyone needs to take into account that the price of tickets continue to go up, and 3-D adds much more money to the "pot".

I meant.. meant to "SEE" it. duh

It looks bigger when dollars are shown. Iv'e said before, though potter had a very good opening day and weekend, if you go by number of tickets sold for TOTAL box office Gone with the Wind is # 1 and Star Wars # 2. The first Potter movie is only at around # 67. It would be hard for any movie today too sell the amount of tickets as back then, even Avatar didn't crack the top ten.

        I cite from wikipedia:
Fans of author J. R. R. Tolkien have drawn attention to the similarities between his novel The Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter series; specifically Tolkien's Wormtongue and Rowling's Wormtail, Tolkien's Shelob and Rowling's Aragog, Tolkien's Nazgûl and Rowling's Dementors, Old Man Willow and the Whomping Willow and the similarities between both authors' antagonists, Tolkien's Dark Lord Sauron and Rowling's Lord Voldemort ...

Rowling is very successful, and it is a thief. These are facts :) Relax :)

No those of us who realize that she wrote a trite story with flat characters criticize it. The first books were okay, a pedestrian read for sure. The last ones were god awful. And we have people calling them "classics". People wouldn't know a bad story if it came up and smacked them across the face.

It was good, but some parts could have benefitted with a little more suspense and struggle such as Molly vs. Bellatrix, for example.
    • Robert Lanier  •  10 mths ago
To be fair it should be based on the number of tickets sold which represents the number of viewers, not the price of a ticket which keeps going up, up, up...

Finally. Something decent to knock off that detestable boredom generator called Twilight. Get that Mary Sue crap off the list.

I loved the movie. Did anyone else shed a tear at the end? While I know every good story has to come to an end, it was still sad to see the screen fade to black and know there was not another movie to come. I guess I just have to pull out book one and start all over again, lol.
    • Diana Tellez  •  10 mths ago
Well I loved the movie and I wish we could find out what happened the 19 years that went by at the end. Only time will tell if we get that treat. All I could say is Wow!!!

I went to the midnight showing, and it was the most amazing experience! I was in a room full of Harry Potter nerds like me, it was awesome. The movie was great, probably the best movie yet, I laughed a lot, cried a lot. Harry Potter will never end!!!!!
    • Headbanger!  •  10 mths ago
I was never into the Harry Potter experience even though I liked all the movies. My daughter has read the books many times and really gets into the storyline and characters. After coming back from Universals Island of adventure which has the world of Harry Potter I began to appreciate the whole experience more....They have come close to the feel of the books in this park and in the movies...Pure entertainment.
Love the last movies...one of the best they had done in every way....

As for all the stupids on this forum bashing this and that...you do not matter and never will.
