    Harry Sargeant Responds to CNN Article on Declining Hospital Care, Urges Medical Giving

    More and more moms are choosing to give birth at home, a new CNN study says, and that’s largely because of declining standards of hospital care. Philanthropist Harry Sargeant says the report is a wake-up call, and should encourage more charitable giving to medical organizations.

    The number of moms choosing to give birth at home is on a steep incline, and, according to a new CNN report, that’s not just pertinent news to expecting mothers, but to hospitals and hospital patients everywhere. According to a new CNN report, the number of home births declined every year from 1990 through 2004, but, ever since 2005, the number has been rising. CNN’s report suggests that many families are choosing home births because, while hospital bills are increasing, the perceived quality of care is decreasing—and according to philanthropist Harry Sargeant, this new trend should be a wake-up call to everyone. An outspoken advocate of charitable giving to hospitals and medical funds, Harry Sargeant has responded to CNN’s report with an urgent plea to increase hospital giving.

    Harry Sargeant points to the CNN study’s assertion that “dissatisfaction” with hospital care is linked to the budgetary restrictions hospitals face. Many women in labor, CNN says, feel that they do not receive full attention because hospitals cannot employ enough doctors and nurses, and therefore choose to experience home birthing with a midwife for their future pregnancies. Harry Sargeant says charitable giving to hospitals is an important step in rectifying this problem.

    The businessman and philanthropist is himself a big believer in hospital giving, and is an especially active fundraiser for the Bethesda Hospital Foundation. Along with wife Deborah, Harry Sargeant currently serves as chairman for the 57th Bethesda Ball.To be held in March 2012, the Bethesda Ball is one of the most significant annual fundraising events for the hospital foundation. This year’s event will feature both a lead-up golf tournament and performances from The Phantom of the Opera. Harry Sargeant is adamant in his advocacy for hospital philanthropy of all varieties, and on a nationwide scale.

    While the CNN report notes that many families simply prefer home births, with cost and care quality not emerging as factors, but even during home births, hospital care is obtained when medical issues arise. Harry Sargeant points to this as proof that, even when hospital alternatives exist, proper hospital funding remains an important priority.
