Health plan sign-ups grow in Mich., online and off
As feds fix HealthCare.gov, Michigan health plan sign-ups rise _ though many enroll offline
DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) -- A suburban Detroit nonprofit organization says it's helped 2,600 people enroll in plans under the new federal health care law.
Adnan Hammad of Dearborn-based ACCESS said Monday that the enrollment comes despite the website's troubled launch. He says most sign-ups have been taken "by hand" but workers are migrating online as the site improves.
Federal officials on Sunday reported major upgrades and improvements to HealthCare.gov. They added more work remains.
ACCESS is one of four organizations in Michigan sharing $2.5 million from the federal government to help people sign up for insurance.
Hammad said on-site navigators were working online Monday but expects it will take time to "move completely to the website."
HealthCare.gov was envisioned as the principal place for people in 36 states to buy insurance.
