    Health Tip: Is Your Baby Breast-Feeding Enough?

    (HealthDay News) -- Nursing moms may be worried that their newborn isn't getting enough to eat, and it can be difficult to tell when you can't see how much baby is eating.

    The womenshealth.gov website mentions these indicators that your breast-feeding baby is getting enough milk:

    • Steady weight gain in the first week after birth.
    • Passing regular urine that is very pale or clear in color.
    • Producing regular bowel movements.
    • Alternating between periods of sleep and alertness/wakefulness.
    • Seeming happy and satisfied when a feeding is finished.
    • A softening of your breast after a feeding.

      this article was so not helpful! to short and what if your baby is 5 months. Eatting habits change frequently, how are we supposed to know if their getting enough when they are older before they start getting solids? These stats are for newborns and are not the same for older babies

      Ask any woman who has a breast full if the baby drank enough. My wife never had a problem knowing when the baby had drank enough.

      My newborn breastfed but also took one bottle of formula at night when I desperately needed a break. Anyway, she did not have a bowel movement for 3 weeks. Her first bowel movement was at 3 weeks of age. Doctors just told me a variety of things - suppositories, fruit juice, etc. but it came out when it was good and ready.

      Usually the baby will stop when it is full. My kids did. I never doubted that they'd gotten enough milk. But it is concerning since you can't see the ounces like you do with a bottle. I know some women who pump their milk all of the time so that they can see the measurement of how much the baby is drinking.

        yes, but unfortunately a pump can never get out as much milk as a baby can. IT isn't a very accurate assessment of how much milk your baby is getting.

      The guidelines in this article are terribly vague. Here's what I can tell you from my training as an IBCLC (lactation consultant): a breastfed infant should be nursing at least 10-12 times per day, should be gaining between 4 and 8 ounces per week (minimum of one pound per month) after the first week, should be producing 5-6 wet disposable (or 6-8 wet cloth) diapers and 3-5 dirty diapers in 24 hours, and should be growing in length and head circumference, as well as meeting appropriate developmental milestones. Weight charts in most pediatricians' offices are based on data from formula-fed babies and are not appropriate for breastfed babies, who follow a different weight-gain curve.
