Health Tip: Don't Take Too Many NSAIDs

(HealthDay News) -- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been around for years and are frequently the medication of choice to relieve pain and inflammation.

But taking too many of this type of drug, which includes aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen, can lead to potential complications, including stomach bleeding or ulcer.

The American Gastroenterological Association says reasons for potential NSAID overdose include:

    • Taking a subsequent dose too soon after taking the initial one.
    • Taking more of the medication at one time than is recommended.
    • Taking a higher dose over a 24-hour period than is recommended.
    • Taking more than one NSAID-containing medication at a time

The first point made to us in my toxicology class was that ANYTHING you put into your body has the ability to cause toxicity if it achieves a high enough concentration.

Have you ever known some of the Idiots that abuse Oxycontin and even drink alcohol with it. Don't they know it contains Tylenol, known to damage your liver especially with alcohol. My Dad's girlfriend died of a massive brain hemmorhage which might have been caused by taking Ibuprofen like they were candy, because of frequent Migraines. She was 46.
      • GOP 6 mths ago
actually oxycontin has no tylenol in it at all. Sorry your wrong. for example oxycodone 10/500 would be 10mg of the drug and 500 mg of acetameophen or tylenol. hurdrocodone can be many different strengths but oxycontin is all the drug in it and thats it. look it up. not making fun just helping you out,.
      • AlcoholTobaccoandFirearms 6 mths ago
Well, if you want to be picky GOP, you're only half-right. Yes, Oxycontin has no Aceteminophin, but as Oxycodone is just generic Oxycontin, neither does it. Hydrocodone IS the one that has Oxycodone and Aceteminophin mixed- (ie 10/500 = 10mg Oxycodone, 500mg Aceteminophin)
        Just sayin'....
      • Harold 6 mths ago
AT&F is confused - hydrocodone is generic vicoden - oxycodone is generic for oxycontin

When it comes to pain control, medicine has gotten rediculously out of control! I have an end-stage terminal disease which affects my liver, pancreas and splean, which has also dropped my platelet count down to 5,000. I bleed everywhere and often, including having had to have 6 gastric bands put on verices in my esophagus and lets' not forget the ascites I get in my addomen! On top of all of this I've got severe nerve, joint, muscle and bone pain. I CANNOT have aspirin, as it'll make me bleed out. I CANNOT have acetamenophen, as it will take out what's left of my liver and kill me. I CANNOT have Ibuprofen, as it inhibits the production of platelets in my bone marrow. So all of the OTC's are OUT. And they STILL don't want to use opiod pain meds! BUT, I've also been obviously very depressed for some time. I tried to get medicine for this, but all of the "safe" ones failed. I went for over a year barely hanging on, before they finally prescribed Cymbalta. It worked excellent on my depression in no time! However, it also gave me a clot in my hepatic vein, among other serious complications. And here's the real kicker....I WAS NOT put on it for depression, but for PAIN ! This was BETTER, to do this to me, than to just give me opiods, which have NEVER caused me ANY complications? I think that BEFORE any physician is allowed to write prescriptions for ANYTHING, they should FIRST be put in severe pain, so they can learn exactly what works, what's #$%$ and when to stop worrying about a patient becoming "dependant" on a medication! I've been through and tried more drugs and procedures than most patients would ever consider. And NOW that all of their "wonder drugs" have failed, all "off-label" prescribing has failed, they want to withhold the one type of medication ( opiod ) that works? Have they not learned that suffering and pain makes EVERY condition WORSE? Do they even care anymore?
      • vrestna 6 mths ago
Hi, I am sorry for your suffering; I really am. I hope that you can find a doctor that will give you what you need.

I wish i had some reefer to give you thank God i found some whei had that folfox chemodripping into the subdermal port couldnt smoke it in the hospital but the eleven days in between the 60 hr treatments were slightly bearable
      • Bwizzle 6 mths ago
Sounds to me like you're seeing the wrong doctors. Any level-headed healthcare professional who knows your medical history, treatment failures, and adverse effects you've experienced would and should put you on some type of opioid. Plenty of legitimate physicians see that the possible improvement in quality of life and reduction in pain far outweigh the risk of dependence. Many doctors worry about over-prescribing controlled narcotics to those that may not really need them, but in cases such as yours, long-term, high dose narcotics may be the only answer. I say find a doctor who will work WITH you and give YOU some say in what kind of therapy you get. Best of luck to you.

Be REAL careful about even over-the-counter NSAIDS! I took Aleve for an extended period after a leg injury, and blacked out while standing up in my office. I was bleeding out until the paramedics arrived. If I had been home alone I would have bled to death; or, even worse, if while driving, I might have killed someone else. Take ONLY as directed, and THEN STOP!
      • life is a challenge 6 mths ago
I took Aleve once and my hands and feet went to sleep. It was frightening. I take one Advil and it is all I need for any type of pain. I would really be afraid for anyone who takes Aleve.
      • VeteranGamer 6 mths ago
Aleve is a far more powerful, far more dangerous NSAID than either aspirin or ibuprofen. They advertise it as "all day strong" but the truth is the FDA wouldn't let them set a 2-pills-every-4-hours dosage!
      • Harold 6 mths ago
Mockingbird - I have been taking Aleve or naproxen for around 4 years for my arthritis. And yeah it really helps, and I also get blackouts and breakout in a cold sweat from head to toe. I did blackout while driving, but pulled over just before the blackout and woke up a couple of minutes later.

I used to take ibuprofen every day after working out. Just like this article says it gave me a bleeding ulcer. I was living on Zantac and Prilosec and was in misery. I quit using ibuprofen and the heartburn was totally gone in a month. Like the article says, don't overdo it, only use when you really need it.
    • Klaatu barada nikto  •  Warwick, United States  •  6 mths ago
too much of anything is no good for you. overdosing is a no no with ANY drug.

These NSAIDs have their place for pain relief if used sensibly. Advil does work to releive pain and everyone is different on their pain threshold. Where I may need 3 Advil tablet to relieve pain, someone else may need only 1 or 2, and on the other side someone may need to take 4 tablets. The amount and time between doses is what matters.
    • Rebecca  •  6 mths ago
Too bad I have fibromyalgia and sometimes ibuprofen is all that will help. I usually only take as needed though, even if it does average out to anywhere from 2-4 pills everyday. My doctor says I can take four at a time but I don't do that very often at all.

To the gastroenterologist, who only sees the people who have bleeding complications, they are "evil" drugs. To most of us, they are great for treating acute and sometimes chronic conditions. NO treatment (natural, mechanical, chemical, or surgical) comes without its risks! Be aware of your risk factors for ulcers, bleeding, kidney problems, liver damage, and allergic reactions. If you're on them long term, discuss it with your primary care provider and make sure appropriate liver and kidney tests are done and your stool is checked for blood.
