    Health Tip: Giving Kids Medicine

    (HealthDay News) -- It's often a challenge to convince kids to take much-needed medicine when they're sick.

    The American Academy of Family Physicians offers these suggestions to make medicine more palatable for children:

    • Refrigerate liquid medicines before giving them to a child.
    • If the doctor or pharmacist says it's ok, mix the medication with a bit of juice or pudding.
    • Ask your pharmacist to mix flavoring into the medication before you take it home.
    • Explain to the child that the medicine will help him or her feel better.

      Dad always said: "Medicine isn't supposed to taste good.. that's how you know it's medicine!" But, I am Happy that flavorings are now available for liquids to make them more palatable. Refrigerating liquid medicine is usually posted on the sides of the bottle- so keeping it chilled should be a no-brainer.
      I also used the "If you don't take your medicine, you'll have to have a shot!" threat- it nearly Always worked!!
      I have to take medicine 3times per day. I take a handful of pills with breakfast every day.. and the kids get their vitamins-plus any prescription they're needing. Same at dinnertime.. we take our meds together. That helps too.

      Is it really that #$%$ hard? Duh on explaining to them it will help them feel better. If that is no help, offer rewards. Say a piece of candy, stay up a few minutes more past bedtime, have an extra story read to them, anything. Or you can go the route of saying "it is either this or the doctor has to give you a shot", generally that one will get the kid to take the medication very happily!
