    Health Tip: Keep Heartburn Under Control

    (HealthDay News) -- Heartburn is the most common symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which occurs when the acidic contents of the stomach back up into the esophagus.

    The American Gastroenterological Association offers these suggestions to help you control heartburn and GERD:

    • Skip beverages or foods that tend to trigger heartburn.
    • Stick to small meals, and eat at least two to three hours before you lie down.
    • Raise the head of your bed about four to six inches.
    • Lose any extra pounds.
    • Skip tight clothing and exercises that may increase abdominal pressure, such as sit-ups.
    • If you're a smoker, quit.

      Good advice, all around. For the small percentage who do not find relief this way (like me), though, don't accept the situation as inevitable. Acid reflux causes actual damage; make sure to get treatment. (And if you've tried any lifestyle changes, keep them up! It's good for you anyway.)

      Nexium, the purple pill...for about 6 weeks.

      Actually, don't overfill your stomach! Do not overeat and eat raw fruits and vegetables. Try eating a small piece of fruit every 2 hours. Key word here is small. Eat dinner at 4 p.m. and don't eat again afterwards except for a small handful of grapes.

      Altough "skipping exercises that may increase abdominal pressure, such as sit ups" is good advice, the most common occurrence that increases abdomial pressure is simply bending over at the waist - if you drop something, bend your knees, keep you back straight and your head up, and then pick it up - better yet, get the kids to pick it up, and when they won't do it anymore get yourself one of those aluminum clasper/picker-uppers from the pharmacy and pick it up that way - saves not only the increase in abdominal pressure, but the back too! The article doesn't mention constipation, but it's a simple mechanical fact that if you're stopped-up below the only direction your last meal can take is back the way it came. A little known pearl: gastroesophogeal reflux (GERD) is the most common cause of adult-onset asthma - while you're sleeping in a flat bed, the stomach contents eruct into the throat (but you don't know that 'cause you're asleep), and you aspirate ("snort") some or all of it with the next snore - the stomach acids and enzymes then start to digest your upper airways and lung tissue (they can't tell the differnce between you and the beefsteak you had for dinner - all meat to them), and you get what's called a "chemical pneumonitis", which can develop into asthma in some folks. That's why after age forty or so, the most important thing in your (new) life is what, and how much of it, you eat. Salud!

      I've had this problem my whole stressful life...Stress is the main precursor....I can be fine but as soon as I lay down forget about it...Have trouble staying asleep too. Over the counter acid reducer pill every night.....None of these suggestions work as I've tried them all.

      So any advice for someone who can't quit smoking, drinking booze and pounding big plates at Cheesecake Factory? Guess I'll raise my headboard and eat early, for starters.
