Health Tip: Manage Pain During Childbirth

(HealthDay News) -- Pain is a virtual certainty during childbirth, but there are ways to ease the discomfort without medication.

The womenshealth.gov website mentions these no-medication possibilities:

    • Practicing relaxation and breathing techniques.
    • Relaxing in a warm shower or bath, or getting a gentle massage.
    • Receiving hot and cold therapy, including placing a cool washcloth on the forehead or a heating pad on the lower back.
    • Seeking the care and support of a doula, nurse or loved one.
    • Trying various positions to get more comfortable, from crouching to walking.
    • Listening to soothing music.
    • Using a labor ball.

These are great suggestions for celebrities, who have enough money to rent their own hospital, but for the average person you just have to make do with the labor room your local hospital offers. And they don't provide massages, warm baths, cool washcloths, etc... Who writes this drivel?

Cold washcloth on forehead???? LOL Maybe for cooling down and remove the sweat. It sure didn't help my pains.

When I was pregnat with my 3rd child I mentioned to the Dr. that I had two very painful deliveries and wanted some options. He asked me which of my first two deliveries was more 'enjoyable' and 'pleasurable" He said to imagine it while giving birth and it would alleviate the pain. I did not go back for another appointment with him !

Yeah, because trying 'different positions' really works when the doctors wants you on your back so THEY can have an easier time.....................

i get the sentiment of the article but the truth is that if you are stuck having a baby in a hospital you are more than likely not going to get a chance to do anything to make yourself more comfortable unless you are willing to raise holy hell to get it.

What idiot wrote this that was apparently completely plagiarized from the womenshealth.gov? I had six kids and NONE of these things are going to be any help whatsoever. I stupidly had "natural" childbirth for the first 5 and an epidural for the 6th and thought that was a great way to ease the pain and why didn't I do it the other 5 times. My daughter just had twins by cesarean and they didn't ease her pain with a washcloth.

This is the most useless article ever written.

give birth at home. one of my best friends married a Dane. she had her first baby in copenhagen this summer. she wanted to do it at home and the hospital sent a midwife to her house for the birth. She said it was the worst pain she has ever experienced but that it was so nice to just go to sleep in her own bed afterward.

if you have no complications you too can give birth from the comfort of your own home, with the help of a skilled midwife, and a supportive partner. and maybe a couple of close friends or family members.

the state of texas recently allowed women on medicaid to choose a home birth. meaning Texas will allow medicaid to pay for a midwife. the state of washington started doing this a few years ago and it has saved the state millions of dollars, because home births cost significantly less than giving birth in a hospital.
