    Health Tip: Seniors Need Exercise, Too

    (HealthDay News) -- Lifting weights and other forms of strength training can offer a host of health rewards for people 65 and older, experts say.

    The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mentions these potential benefits for seniors of strength training:

    • Better management of chronic diseases, including diabetes.
    • Improved balance.
    • Better management of arthritis pain and stiffness.
    • Stronger bones and reduced risk of osteoporosis.
    • Maintaining a healthier weight.
    • Improved cardiovascular health.
    • Better quality sleep.

      the dr group I go to has a fitness center / physical therapy in the basement. The fitness center is geared for older folks, I love it! And sleep like a baby the days I work out!

      One problem I have found is that none of the physical trainers in the average gym seem to understand the limitations of older joints. I have arthritis and am fine with the exercises provided by my physical therapist. But a couple of my friends have been injured following weight training programs provided by young physical trainers from fitness centers. Fitness for seniors is definitely necessary but the programs often need to be modified to prevent injuries.

      The real question is how to get people to exerise more. Tax credits for gym memberships. Financial penalties for obesity. Tax sugar and trans fat.
