App that helps NYC residents find healthy eating options is winner of annual BigApps contest

NEW YORK (AP) -- An iPhone application that helps New Yorkers find healthy food options at nearby restaurants tailored to their dietary needs and preferences has won the city's annual BigApps contest.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Thursday that HealthyOut was selected from 54 applications submitted by software developers who create web and mobile apps using public, private and crowdsourced data.

For this year's competition, the city made available 1,000 different data sets to developers, provided by city agencies, commissions and Business Improvement Districts.

HealthyOut won $55,000 in prize money.

The best jobs and economic mobility app went to an Android app called ChildCareDesk, which helps parents find quality child care centers.

A total of eight prizes were awarded to seven wining applications and $150,000 in prize money was awarded.
