Hearse used after JFK slain in Dallas sells

DALLAS (AP) — The man who paid $176,000 for the white hearse used to transport President John F. Kennedy's body following his assassination in Dallas plans to include it in his collection of about 400 cars in Colorado.

Stephen Tebo, a collector and real estate developer from Boulder, bought the hearse Saturday that was being offered by Barrett-Jackson Auction Co. of Scottsdale, Ariz. It sold for a bid of $160,000, plus a $16,000 buyer's premium.

The 1964 Cadillac hearse carried Kennedy's body as well as first lady Jacqueline Kennedy from Parkland Memorial Hospital to Air Force One at Dallas' Love Field for the flight back to Washington on Nov. 22, 1963, according to the auction company.

"It was a solemn duty that it had taking him from the hospital where he was pronounced dead to Air Force One," said Craig Jackson, CEO and chairman of the auction company. "I think everybody in the world remembers watching the hearse leave the hospital, heading toward Air Force One. It just sort of sunk into everybody that he's gone."

The hearse had been on display at a funeral home directors' convention in Dallas in October 1963, the auction company said. After the convention, O'Neal Funeral Home of Dallas bought the hearse. It was that funeral home that was called upon to transport the president's body.

In the late 1960s, the hearse was bought by Arrdeen Vaughan, a Texas man who owns funeral homes and a funeral vehicle business. He kept it in a private collection for more than four decades before selling it to the person who eventually put it up for auction.

Tebo said he plans to turn his car collection into a museum, hopefully in five to 10 years. The collection in Longmont, just outside of Boulder, is not currently open to the public, but Tebo does open it up four times a year to different nonprofit groups to help them raise money.

Other cars in his collection include a 1965 Rolls Royce custom made for John Lennon, a taxi used in the TV show "Seinfeld" and a jeep Frank Sinatra used on his ranch.

Tebo said he had expected the hearse would sell for anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million, so he wasn't planning on bidding. But he jumped it when he saw the bids weren't likely to go that high. As a collector, he said he tries to buy significant vehicles when possible.

Tebo said he wanted the hearse because of its historical significance.

"We remember specifically seeing the hearse leaving the hospital and driving very, very slowing to Air Force One and loading the casket on Air Force One. It was just an incredibly dramatic time in our lives," Tebo said.

The guy who sold this must be kicking himself! Originally, this car was auctioned before and the high bid was $900,000 but that didnt meet the auctions reserve so it didnt sell! This time the auction was a no reserve auction and he only gets $176,000! GOOD, that is what he gets for being greedy and trying to make money off of a terrible tragedy! Car should have been donated to a museum

Another rich man's toy. The money would have been better spent as a donation to a worthy cause! Such selfishness...

I also remember a US Navy Pontiac ambulance which met the casket at Andrews AFB unloading the casket from the lift truck which took casket from the plane. Does anyone know what happened to that car or any record of the helicopter which then flew the casket to Bethesda Navy Hospital.

That hearse was a steal. The guy who sold it should have kept it until the 50th anniversary on Nov. 22, 2013.

Oh yes I remember the shooting and all of that at the time I was 16 and my Older Brother had Enlisted in the Air Force in 1962. Kennedy is gone but if it had not been for JFK we would all be speaking Russian as a main Language. The Cuban Missle Crisis was the almot the end of the USA.

No, the USA was almost the end of the Cuban Missile Crisis !!! See how nationalistic perspective works, Clyde ? Not to be snide, it's all just a ride
(Google "It's all just a ride')........... the cat explains it post-mortem, RIP.

JFK was killed in 1963, and transported in a 1964 caddi ? What , did they wait a year to move the body ?

You must be a kid. Back then the new models came out in the fall of the preceeding year, so the 1964 cars would have been out in November 1963.
      • SMOKEY 3 mths ago
Most new year models came out in August of the previous year.

Ah yes. The same hearse that ILLEGALLY transported JFK's body out of Parkland to AF1 in complete violation of State law ( assassination of a President was not a Federal crime in 1963). Just think if Dr. Earl Rose had completed the autopsy in accordance with Texas law how the cornball conspiracy theories over the years might have dissolved. Instead we have the botched and RFK dictated mess that occurred at Bethesda which in itself was a sham.

Which hearse? The one you see in most photos was a '63 Pontiac and we can't forget there must have been a decoy owing to two arrival times at the morgue.
      • Two Step Mamba 3 mths ago
You are correct,I remember that 1963 Pontiac,I think that one bought JFK to the Hospital morgue?? The 1964 Cadillac I think bought him from The Hospital to Air Force One for the final trip back to Washington D.C.

What I was alluding to was that there must have been more than one ambulance in DC and possibly two in Dallas. If you're of the Oswald did it crowd, it comes down to one in Dallas, one in DC.

i may be wrong, but i think the pontiac was at the washington end of the trip.

If I understand this right the seller didn't sell at a previous auction because he wanted a million and the high bid was $900,000. So he sells at an auction where there is no reserve allowed and gets $176,000. Had to be Karma based on greed. He lost $700,000 because he wanted more. Must have thought he would get his million at Barrett-Jackson. Probably can't walk away from a slot machine either when he is ahead.

Yes, you are correct and I am happy that it sold for way less! Terrible to make that kind of money off a tragedy!

It was a sad day for everyone...however, he was a mediocre president and morally bankrupt in many areas. His major claim to fame was thrust upon him. The hearse is a curiosity at best. Kind of like Grover Cleveland's belt.
      • Gregster 3 mths ago
Yeah, his heroism on PT109, and his leadership through the Cuban missle crisis are such trivial details. The tea party tries so hard to rewrite history.

As are most demos, JFK and LBJ were liberal traitors. Their legislation transformed the U.S. into the sewer that it has become.

Check behind the seats, under the hood...real close around the spare tire. Perhaps his brain will finally turn up (it was "lost" at some point during the autopsy.
