Heart Disease Risk Gene May Pass From Dads to Sons

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 8 (HealthDay News) -- An increased risk for coronary artery disease can be passed genetically from father to son on the male Y chromosome, a new study says.

The Y chromosome, a part of DNA present only in men, appears to play a role in the inheritance of coronary artery disease, according to researchers at the University of Leicester in England and their colleagues.

They analyzed DNA from more than 3,000 biologically unrelated men in the United Kingdom and found that 90 percent had variants of Y chromosomes belonging to one of two major groups -- haplogroup I and haplogroup R1b1b2.

Men with a Y chromosome from haplogroup I have a 50 percent higher risk of coronary artery disease than other men, and that risk is independent of risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, the researchers found. Those men account for up to 20 percent of men in Britain, they said.

They attributed this increased risk to the effect of the haplogroup I Y chromosome on the immune system and inflammation.

"We are very excited about these findings as they put the Y chromosome on the map of genetic susceptibility to coronary artery disease. We wish to further analyze the human Y chromosome to find specific genes and variants that drive this association," principal investigator Dr. Maciej Tomaszewski, a clinical senior lecturer in the department of cardiovascular sciences, said in a university news release.

"The major novelty of these findings is that the human Y chromosome appears to play a role in the cardiovascular system beyond its traditionally perceived determination of male sex," Tomaszewski added.

The study appears online Feb. 8 in The Lancet.

Coronary artery disease is narrowing of the blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. This can lead to angina symptoms and heart attacks. It develops in men about a decade earlier than in women.

My father died of heart disease before he had kids. What is my risk?

Wrong nationality. At least you got the sarcasm.

None since he was not your father. Good sense of humor though.

This is a true fact that the US. gov website published a few back. Ten out of ten men will die sometime in their life time.

WOW! That's interesting, especially since the same is true for women.

Whether the son in our family inherited it or not is yet to be determined, brother still alive.
A sister died at 41 of heart disease. Brother did get the diabetes.

Thanks for another thing to worry about. Give it six months and a new study will say something totally different. Remember, in the 80's when they said coffee could cause cancer and now it's good for you.

My husband died of the same heart problem his father had. Only my husband died 6 years younger than his dad and my husband was the one who had bypass surgery. He never felt good afterwards and I believe it shortened his life. Never assume surgery is the best option!

Who's to say he would've lived much longer without the surgery?? He could've had a heart attack and died the next day without there being any bypass surgery. For most, as long as they any heart attack and survive surgery, will live many years more. There are exceptions, and unfortunately your husband was one. As any cardiologist would tell you, blockage is a ticking time bomb!! There's only so much a heart can keep pumping and giving oxygen before things really go amiss. Sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss Georgian, but I too have had by-pass(five in fact) three years ago. I would definitely not have survived for three more years had I not had it.

This study links increased risk with exaggerated inflammation response, not cholesterol nor connective tissue. Those at risk may benefit from anti inflammatory spices such as turmeric, or very low dose ibuprofen, or anti coagulants such as fish oil and aspirin. We already knew these therapies were helpful. Now we have a genotype that would be most helped.

      Thanks dad.... 48 and out...

I'm no scientist, but I strongly disagree with this study. I'm female and have coronary artery disease. My dad had it and one of my grandfather's also had it. I do not know of a female relative who has died from it in my family. My doctor says mine is inherited. I also had a genetic defect in the heart that caused an SVT that had to be corrected. My sister and I both had that. I suspect, but do not know for sure that my dad had that too.

About time dads get the blame for things happening to kids; especially to their sons!! :)

If it is carried in the Y chromosome then only men can get it (when y is in the mix only boys are conceived) So what causes it in women (even if it appears later) be they do not get a Y from daddy.
      • Younger Grandma 3 mths ago
Women don't get it. It must be some other type of similar disease which my mom and aunt have had. (sarcasm) Or at least inheritance is no longer a risk for women. Whew, I'm saved from that risk since my dad has it. and all the way up his line.

Being a male is a risk factor since they inherit it. Glad I don't have any risk factors anymore since I can't inherit it. :) As long as a woman takes care of herself, she can never have it!! :) (sarcasm)

What were the thoughts on this subject before this highly intelligent, probably highly expensive study was done ?I was under the impression that genetics were behind all human structure, good and bad.

'This can lead to angina symptoms and heart attacks. It develops in men about a decade earlier than in women. '

Nope, women don't have heart disease anymore. It's totally something else. (Maybe it's the gallbladder that mimics heart symtoms.) There's no genetic disposition in women since there's no y chromosome. (sarcasm)

DIET, DIET, DIET, DIET, and other bad lifestyle choices will have far wider impact on a man than any stupid y chromosome genes!!! Which the average man tends to eat a bad diet for more years than the average woman does. And even when married, they'll tend to want the bad foods alot more often and especially when out at a restaurant. AVERAGE MAN, not the one who always making health conscious choices.

I think everyone knows that alot of diseases are genetic.
    • shade tree  •  3 mths ago
if you have a heart you have the genes for heart disease...if you are stressed or obese you will increase that risk. where is my $200 million for research?

so does baldness in many cases! try to find a father with good hair a good heart and brains aint easy!!!!!!!!!

And peoiple are actually getting paid to come up with this schitt? Things that most of us kinew before we turned 12?
    • Younger Grandma  •  3 mths ago
Nice to know that as a woman, I've NOTHING to fear!! :)

Whey do women have any at all???? Why has my mom and aunt suffered when my grandmother didn't have it, nor her mother???

It's GREAT to know that there is SOMETHING that's can't be blamed on mama!! :)
