Heart Failure, Diabetes Might Be Linked by Protein

THURSDAY, Jan. 5 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers may have pinpointed how heart disease can lead to diabetes, a finding that could lead to new preventive treatments.

The team at Chiba University in Japan found that the stress of heart failure activates a protein called p53, resulting in inflammation in fat tissue, systemic insulin resistance and worsening heart function.

This domino effect is outlined in a study in the January issue of the journal Cell Metabolism.

"Our findings clarify the reasons why the incidence of heart failure is high among diabetic patients, why the prevalence of insulin resistance is increased in heart failure patients and why treatment of insulin resistance improves the prognosis of heart failure patients," study author Tohru Minamino said in a journal news release.

Previous research by the author has shown that build-up of p53 in the heart -- from stress or age -- promotes heart failure, the release said. While p53 is best known as a tumor suppressor, it is also a cellular aging agent, according to Minamino. He explained that constant activation of p53 can lead to inflammation and aging-related diseases.

Finding a way to block inflammation associated with p53 activation without compromising the protein's tumor-fighting abilities could lead to anti-aging therapy without the cancer risk, Minamino said.

Wow. The level of ignorance. What about type 1 diabetes? That's something you're born with.

X, you obviously know nothing about diabetes. I battled for 2 decades to stay off the meds. I don't drink soda, gave that up 2 decades ago when they diagnosed me being border line and that I would be insulin dependent within five years. I don't eat trash, as you call it. Eventually, the pancreas stops producing what's needed to break down even the good carbs. I now have to take 2 pills everyday. Yes, eating right and exercising can help a diabetic stay healthier longer, but it will not cure one of the disease.

Take care of yourself if you have diabetes...I had it for 13 years and was on Actos...
so now I've been on dialysis 3 years. Believe me, it is the worst treatment system you
could ever imagine. Every other day you're stuck in an uncomfortable chair for 4 hours
and unable to do anything, with 2 huge needles stuck in one arm and a blood pressure
cuff on the other. Hindsight is 20-20!

living will. advanced medical directives would have kept you off the machine. why live sick all the time, quality vs. quantity. already have my living will and amd in place, no dialysis under any conditions. type 1 diabetic.

I've been diabetic for eight years now on insulin and haven't seen a Doctor in seven. I can't find a full time job with insurance, nor find insurance. I take care of myself the best I can and do check my sugar obsessively. What a great country I live in.

How do you get your insulin if you have not seen a Doctor?
      • ellquestion authority 4 mths ago
how can you afford all those test strips? insulin requires a prescription. liar.

Diabetes is on the list to qualify for SSD or SSI. So, why lie about it. All that stuff you mentioned is very costly without insurance. I know, I'm diabetic.

I was diagnosed more than 4 yrs ago ...Thought I could beat the system. Its called denial especially with what I was eating. No more denial now,,, If I end up with a sore,,, it takes forever to h eal, neuropathy has set in with the feet and there are many frequent trips to the throne room. I wish I had listened both to friends and especially to my doctor who warned me many times. Now,,, I am having much difficulty walking and am very very overweight. Its a hellish disease,,,, so if there are those of you out there just in the beginning stages or have been told you are pre-diabetic,, get on the stick and do not mess with it. Its deadly and trust me when I tell you,,, it can be dealt with if gotten early enough. Please.... do yourself and your loved ones a favor and do all you can. Educate yourself, take the classes that many hospitals offer, and just maybe you will will be one of the lucky ones who escapes its ravages.

If you need a Guinea Pig, I'm volunteering. Diabetes is a horrible disease, having been diagnosed with it over 20 years ago. I would do anything to be free from it.

Skeptical of this. I was diagnosed with heart failure 11 years ago and I am NOT diabetic.
      • teio 4 mths ago
It saids there might be a link. Heart failure can lead to diabetes. That does not mean everyone who has heart failure will develop diabetes. You just have an increased risk. Further research will be needed, and there are a lot of factors to consider in the real world. Not every person with heart failure is the same or have the same outcomes.

My husband had diabetes for 20 years and passed away at the age of 54 from heart failure. The doctors never checked his heart until it was working at less than 10%. You need to look up all the info you can so you can ask the right questions ,we didnt know about the heart connection until it was to late and he needed a heart. My husband lived for 6 mo. after they told us he needed a heart.

The "diabetes" discussed here is diabetes mellitus, not type 2. These people (often sedentary, overweight candidates for heart disease) have become insulin resistant over time. The P53 protein could be responsible for the diabetes TRIGGERED by the heart failure.

Um... no... Carbohydrates. Sugars (Glucosamine) that keeps your hemoglobin (red blood cell count high) heathy and strong. It's converted into energy then are burned off. They are turned to waste in your kidneys that keep your digestive system clean. Ever heard of Monosaccharides and Triglycerides? If your pancreas can't periodically produce a sufficient amount of daily blood sugar intake your too low on blood sugar. Resulting in a balanced non-carb meal. 3x a day to elevate glucose blood cells.
