    Heart Failure, Osteoporosis Go 'Hand-in-Hand': Researchers

    TUESDAY, Feb. 7 (HealthDay News) -- Heart failure is linked to thinning of the bones and an increased risk of fractures, a new study indicates.

    The findings suggest that aggressive screening for osteoporosis may be important for heart failure patients, the researchers said.

    They looked at data from about 45,500 adults who underwent bone mineral density testing for the first time and were followed for up to 10 years. Of those people, 1,841 had recent-onset heart failure.

    After the researchers adjusted for traditional osteoporosis risk factors, they concluded that heart failure was associated with a 30 percent increased risk of major fractures.

    The study will be published in the April issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

    "Our study demonstrates for the first time that heart failure and thinning of bones go hand in hand," study author Dr. Sumit Majumdar, of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, said in a journal news release. "Understanding the mechanism between heart failure and osteoporosis might lead to new treatments for both conditions."

    He suggested that osteoporosis screening should include examining chest X-rays of patients with heart failure.

    "Heart failure patients get a lot of X-rays and they often incidentally show many fractures of the spine that would automatically provide an indication of severe osteoporosis and need for treatment," Majumdar said.

      I guess it has to do with hormones because that was my problem and fibromyalgia which I thought was just a physiological problem like chronic fatigue all in the head.. turned out over time not to be so funny i never treated it with anything but Ibuprofen over the counter daily for 10 years and it turned real bad and took at toll because it kept you feverish and dehydrated from the inflammation response in the blood count and all. It has to be connected. I never had hardly any periods and one child at 20 and no more after that and into menopause by 37-38 years old...has to be hormonal.

      I thought Osteoporosis was mainly a geriatric thing but I found out it is not just the elderly it can be younger people even late 20's to 30's. I think it is in the genes this way because most of my family on mom's side has had serious problems with it after my uncle got vertebrates in the neck replaced with cadaver bones he die walking into the house about 24 months latter and was not but 56 years old. I went haywire after pregnancy lost a lot of calcium couldn't keep it up then started having heart problems bone loss even in my jaw and neck...when the doctor told me that was what it was about 10 or more years ago I thought I did not have to worry about it for another 20 years or more. I was wrong.

      Ibuprofen don't help. been through every NSAID no help.... could this have something to do with the crap they are spraying in the clouds? missing discs, bone to bone contact here!

      Sounds like more research funded by pharmaceuticals to get more people to undergo radiation tests and then take drugs they don't need. Wasn't it one of them who created osteoporosis in the first place??
      Dairy countries have more osteo than vegetarian ones...so let's blame heart trouble and bones on the acid foods we eat...meat and dairy need to go.

      I drink 6-8 bottles of soda everyday to elevate my levels of phosphorous and leach the calcium out of my bones. If I break bones I can just go to the ER and get free treatment 'cause I have no health insurance and the t party is fighting to make sure I never have to buy any.
