'Heavy hearted' Gerrard bids adieu to international football

London, July 22 (ANI): After claiming 114 caps, England captain Steven Gerrard has ended his 14-year long career in international football. According to the BBC, the 34-year old midfielder won his first cap in 2000 in a 2-0 win over Ukraine and his last in a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Gerrard conceded that the decision was difficult but added that he had been contemplating it for a long time. He also said that he enjoyed representing his country in every match on the international platform. Gerrard will now move on to assume charge of the high-profile role of an ambassador with the Football Association. He will however, continue playing for Liverpool, the club for whom he made his debut in 1998 against Blackburn Rovers. In his international career, he has scored 21 goals and played six major tournaments. He is also England's third-most capped football player after Peter Shilton (125) and David Beckham (115). (ANI)
