Her Own Mission: Impossible? How Katie Holmes Divorced Tom Cruise

Staff firings, secret cell phones - how did Katie Holmes pull off her own "Mission: Impossible," blindsiding Tom Cruise with her divorce filings?

"Tom was in Iceland filming 'Oblivion,' he was doing one of those action scenes," People magazine's Carlos Greer told Access Hollywood , of when Tom got the news. "He was on his motorcycle, the crew was looking on, and then he got an unexpected call from Katie and she dropped the divorce bomb."

On Tuesday, Katie kept both daughter Suri and mom Kathleen close in New York and, according to People, Katie's actions before her June 29 divorce filing were meticulously calculated.

"She and Tom, they went apartment hunting," Carlos said. "He thought that he was going to live in the apartment with her, but she in fact was planning to divorce him."

Furthermore, Katie reportedly used a different cell phone with the help of friends so her divorce talks could be completely classified.

"Days before she even filed for divorce, she was still telling Tom 'I love you,' so Tom was completely blindsided by this decision," Carlos said.

Katie's attorney father, Martin, reportedly helped orchestrate his daughter's plight by firing the entourage Tom had hired for her.

However, reports that the settlement precludes Suri from being exposed to Scientology are false, according to Katie's lawyer.

"Tom is going to be a part of Suri's life, so she will likely be exposed to Scientology," Carlos said, adding that Katie herself is most likely done with the religion. "She hasn't been involved with Scientology for months, and it appears that that wasn't a huge factor. Sources tell People that the main reason was that she was really unhappy in this marriage, and she wanted control, she wanted her freedom back, and she wanted her career."
