Herman Cain accusers and Anita Hill: how do they compare?

Twenty years ago, it was Anita Hill's word against Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. With Herman Cain, several women have charged him with sexual harassment, and public attitudes have changed.

Herman Cain’s problems with alleged sexual harassment against women recall the episode 20 years ago when Anita Hill accused Clarence Thomas, nominated to the United States Supreme Court, of the same offense. Ms. Hill was a young lawyer who had worked for Mr. Thomas at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Mr. Cain’s defenders (and the candidate himself) have raised the comparison with the phrase “high-tech lynching,” the same thing Mr. Thomas accused his critics of during his Senate confirmation hearings. And the other day at a campaign stop in Kalamazoo, Mich., Cain joked with a supporter that perhaps Ms. Hill would endorse him – something he later felt compelled to say was “in no way intended to be an insult.”

A day earlier, Cain had to apologize for referring to former House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi as “Princess Nancy,” a phrase many took to be borderline sexism.

ELECTION 101: 11 things you should know about Herman Cain

The differences in the Cain and Thomas cases are important.

In 1991, it was basically his word against hers, and Thomas was confirmed as associate justice of the Supreme Court in a rancorous and raw public episode that saw Ms. Hill vilified and slandered as “a little bit nutty and a little bit slutty” by then-conservative firebrand David Brock (who has since admitted to “character assassination” in writing about Hill).

While Rush Limbaugh and other right-wing commentators have personally attacked the women in Cain’s case (including comments on their appearance), it involves multiple accusers, several of whom filed formal complaints resulting in large financial payments.

“It is because of Anita Hill’s legacy that presidential candidate Herman Cain is having a much tougher time minimizing the charges of sexual harassment raised against him than he or his campaign advisers ever imagined,” blogs Anne Doyle at Forbes.com. Ms. Doyle is a consultant, speaker, and author of "Powering Up! How America's Women Achievers Become Leaders."

A lot has changed in two decades, Doyle writes, but not enough.

“Sexual harassment in the workplace remains an issue,” she writes. “One in 10 women today are promised promotions or better treatment if they will be ‘sexually cooperative.’ And the female citizens and workers of this country are still shamefully under-represented at every level of political office, court systems and corporations. But thanks to the courage of leaders such as Anita Hill who dare to speak truth to power, we’re making progress.”

These days, Anita Hill is a professor at Brandeis University and a lawyer specializing in civil rights and employment practices.

She’s on tour promoting her latest book “Reimagining Equality: Stories of Gender, Race, and Finding Home,” and while she has no comment on Cain himself, she does have things to say about today's response to sexual harassment charges compared to 20 years ago.

“I am proud that the issue is now front and center,” Hill told an audience of women in Detroit recently. “But much more needs to be done. Younger and younger girls are being harassed in the workplace. We must envision a workplace where sexual harassment does not exist.”

“Men now file 12 percent of the sexual harassment cases, which is more evidence that workplace harassment is about power,” Hill said.

And speaking as a member of Time magazine’s Person of the Year panel earlier this week, Hill said this:

“Twenty years ago the conversation was entirely different, I mean we all know that. But it has evolved, in the past 20 years, to where we are today. We have evolved tremendously in discussing these kinds of issues. And in some ways it’s just not simply the description of sort of he said-she said, just sort of throwing that out as a way to explain everything, no longer exists. I mean there is some deliberate inquiry and that’s what I think should continue to happen.”

It’s unlikely that Herman Cain will again make light of Anita Hill’s experience 20 years ago.

“I think if you look at the concerns we have about issues like sexual harassment, if you look at the tragedy at Penn State, if you look at how people feel in general about this kind of stuff, it’s not something to be joked about,” he said on the Laura Ingraham show on Friday.

Excuse me ... what did the Dem's do to Gennifer Flowers and Paula Jones. How come there is not mention of that in this article?
      • Ooga 6 mths ago
That would go under presidential impeachments. Clarence Thomas skated (as Herman is doing).

"The differences in the Cain and Thomas cases are important."
      Okay, what are they?
      "... it involves multiple accusers..."
If five people came forward about the SAME incident, THEN it would be different. However these are five SEPARATE accusations. That means five INDIVIDUAL 'he said/she said' situations.
"..several of whom filed formal complaints resulting in large financial payments."
That's horribly misleading. Cain didn't settle, the National Restaurant Association did; meaning no guilt was ever admitted by Cain. It can easily be argued that the Association found a settlement to be CHEAPER than going to court.

Cain's been running for President for a year now? Yet these women wait until he's the front runner before coming forward with their claims?

I also like how the article ASSUMES Anita Hill was telling the truth in her case 20 years ago, and since that was a 'he said/she said' situation, it then "logically" follows that the accusers of Cain MUST be telling the truth too.

Cain might be guilty, sure. But so far, there's about as much evidence for that as evidence for him being Santa Clause. What evidence you ask? Why, I say he's Santa Clause!

nice long winded but Ignorant & Stupid post there, seen.
      • Sean 6 mths ago
It's one thing to say I'm ignorant and stupid, it's another to show it.

Here's an example: 'Seen' is incorrectly pronouncing the name 'Sean' since the name is of Gaelic origin, not English. Making such a mistake proves ignorance.

If a personal attack is your argument, than you have no argument at all.

Thank you, Wiggly. It's good to know a second side still exists on the internet.

The main difference between the two is that Thomas had the entire Senate Judiciary Committee behind him, and therefore the whole Republican party, without regard to the truth, and with regard only to political power.
      • Carole 6 mths ago
Excuse me,but I watched those hearings from beginning to end. The Judiciary Committee was made up of an equal number of Dems and Pubs. I did not believe a word of what Anita Hill said,it was obvious to me that the Democrats were willing to do anything to keep Clarence Thomas ( a conservative) from becoming a Supreme Court justice.

He had to apologize for saying "Princess Nancy"? Come on!!!!!!! Will Harry Belefonte and Cornel West apologize for calling him the "uncalled for" names they uttered. Probably Not!!! It's also funny to me how Paula Jones' allegations were swept under the carpet after she went to NOW for help, they did NOTHING for her b/c Clinton was their poster boy.

Why would these "ladies" wait 20 years to complain about Herman Cain? I'd rather know why President Obama made so many promises during his first campaign and waited until his second campaign to do anything about his promises 3 years ago. I'd like to know what Mr Obama plans to do when Iran plans to drop an atomic bomb in Israel. These people are so hell bent on destroying the Jews they don't seem to have given a thought to what an atomic bomb is going to do to the land they want to occupy. Let's see.....what's the half life of the time the land of Israel will be able to be occupied by these "peace loving" people.

Twenty years ago, as a 25 year old man and working for a county government in Maryland, I remember a female coworker approaching me from the back in my office and grabbing my butt. I was also married at the time. She was playful all the time with me at the agency but eventually left. Nothing other than subtle flirtation ever occurred. If this gal was now running for the U.S. Senate, and after 20 years, I came forward to disclose this incident on a national stage, I would be perceived as a vicious, evil, immature, self-centered, money-seeking "man." But it's funny, these women seem to be immune from such a characterization.
    • iounada  •  Brighton, United Kingdom  •  6 mths ago
The attackers are the left leaning media and the DNC. This is there typical plan. All you have to do is look at what they were doing to Palin. I say were because up until the time she announced she was not going to run the media attacking her and her family. Since then you hear no mention which is strange because you would read stories on her each day and the MSNBC slanderers, the not so funny comedians such as Maher, etc were beating up on her every chance they got. Which was about each night! If Sarah Palin decides to back Herman Cain watch for the daily grind against her and her family to start back up. They will have stories and photos o her daughter lving with 2 black guys, partying, and more. Herman and Sarah are two people that are not afraid of the media and only want to return the USA to being a great country again and to rid Congress of the corruption that is so pronounced. Say what you will, but Herman Cain is more than a threat to politicians. He is a threat to those race shysters who are making a lot of money by keeping the Black Man and Woman down. Anyone who says you need a crutch from the Government because of your race or ethnic background is a criminal and racist. People like Sharpton and Jackson live a luxurious and lavish lifestyle and need to keep racial tension up to maintain their lifestyle.

Disgusting liberals have the nerve to accuse a black man of sexual impropriety while Bubba Clinton got a free pass from these same deviants. There is no more intolerant hypocritical #$%$ on the face of the earth than a liberal. Throw in racist and you have the hat trick of deplorable behavior.

Cain accusers vs. Anita Hill? Well for one thing, there's more women accusing Herm, a lot more.
    • The Great  •  6 mths ago
Godfathers pizza sales in 1987 were 260 million. Cain became president in 1986. When he left to become a lobbyist in 1995, sales for the prior year (94) were 256 million. Turnaround or coasting along? You decide.
    • Arbutus Dave  •  6 mths ago
Not very well. At least Anita had the guts to come forward on her own.
    • Tom  •  Yangon, Myanmar  •  6 mths ago
I absolutely believed Ms. Hill at the Senate hearing, and I still believe Ms. Hill. Look at what Mr. Clarence Thomas has been behaving in last twenty years. Mr. Cain seems to be a smart and intelegent guy, but I don't think he has fair and reasonable judgement on women.
    • truthlover  •  Houston, United States  •  6 mths ago
This is ridiculous! Multiple people crawling out of the woodwork to lie about someone does not make it the truth! Check the history of these people! If you recall there was an entire panel of women that came out in support of Clarence Thomas and that mattered to no one, certainly no one in the press! The liberal establishment can't have a conservative black man in the public eye who has succeeded WITHOUT the benefit of their welfare system. It discredits it and gives the black population hope. The liberals cannot allow the black community to think that they don't need the democrats with their entitlement programs. They'd never win another election. Black people, I don't understand why you don't see Herman Cain as a role model or mentor. He came from humble beginnings, worked hard to get an education and has become a success. This is the American dream! It's there for you! You have the freedom, in this country, to become whatever you love enough to work hard for and acheive. I wish this for you!
    • B  •  6 mths ago
Boy...you liberals are really grasping now. It's actually kind of fun to watch your desperation.
    • Uncle  •  Springfield, United States  •  6 mths ago
I'm very dubious about the charges for a number of reasons. I'm sure occasionally a woman actually IS harassed, but for the vast majority, the harassment runs the other way. I've worked in the corporate world and the number of women who using sexuality as a rung on their career ladder is so pervasive there is even a term for them; titty shakers. In any office environment there is always a percentage of the female workers who practically throw themselves on male managers, hoping to rise through the company on merits having nothing to do with their job skills. When such women don't get what they want, THEN they scream harassment. It's a very common hazard and one that, apparently, Cain has faced many times in the corporate world. Let me clue you in, folks, female most definitely does NOT automatically equal saint.
