Herman Cain: Serial Denier, in Denial, or Telling the Truth?

The Truth of the Sexual Harassment Scandal Might Never Be Known

COMMENTARY | The Herman Cain sexual harassment scandal stands thusly: allege and accuse, deny and accuse. The presidential hopeful is accused of inappropriate behavior while president and CEO of the National Restaurant Association (NRA). Two of the women remain unidentified. One, the first to come forward, Sharon Bialek, has provided salacious details of her encounter with Cain. The second, one of the women formerly unidentified in the initial Politico article that first revealed that the allegations existed, Karen Kraushaar, has admitted that she made a financial settlement and signed a non-disclosure agreement with the NRA about the complaint she filed. Cain continues, as noted by CNN, to deny any sexual harassment or wrongdoing whatsoever on his part, maintaining it is all a political plan to discredit and ruin his presidential campaign.

As one accuser says Cain is "in denial" (Bialek) and another labels the businessman a "serial denier" (Kraushaar), it should be noted that the allegations of his accusers are just that -- alleged acts and situations believed to be of a sexually harassing nature in complaints brought by them against the president/CEO of the NRA. It should also be noted that although Kraushaar was one of the women who accepted a cash settlement in return for signing a non-disclosure statement, Bialek filed no complaint. Her allegations come 14 years after the alleged act. She and her attorney, Gloria Allred, told reporters that being between jobs at the time of the incident and no longer being employed by the NRA, she was unsure with whom or what entity a complaint should be filed and subsequently did not.

But if the besieged former CEO of Godfather's Pizza is telling the truth, would it not stand to reason that he would deny the allegations? And even if he is lying to save his reputation, his 43-year marriage, and his presidential campaign, does that make him "in denial?" Hardly.

Believing he has done nothing wrong if he has been inappropriate would make him a candidate for denial.

But, again, if Cain is telling the truth about the allegations -- and there may never be any concrete evidence beyond the he said-she said testimony -- would that not make him a "serial denier" by necessity?

Of course, Herman Cain could very well be guilty of the sexual harassment allegations (or even part of them), but unless he admits to acting inappropriately, they remain nothing but allegations. The opposite could also be true -- that he is innocent of the allegations and that the women that have accused him are fabricating their stories. Unless they admit their dishonesty, the accusations still remain allegations.

So is Cain in denial? Is he just a serial denier? Or has he been telling the truth all along?

Cain said in a press conference Tuesday that the accusations would not cause him to withdraw from the GOP presidential nomination race.

Unfortunately, the truth may never be known in this he said-she said debate. But if Herman Cain wants to deny that his campaign will continue unaffected by the scandal, he might at least be in denial about something.

Innocent until proven guilty, so I'm not going to say he's absolutely guilty, but regardless, he's handled this terribly.
      • James W 6 mths ago
What is he supposed to do? He said he didn't do it, they said he did. What can he do or say that will be good enough? Should he just admit that he did it even if he didn't? Should he go away because someone accused him. His situation is no-win. For most people, he was accused therefore he's guilty, even with absolutely no evidence.
      • ws 6 mths ago
Pretty easy to solve James. All he has to do is allow the settlement info to be publically released.
      • CALIFORNIA REPUBLICan 6 mths ago
I don't think Ws is right. Obviously, these women made allegations. The settlement would air all those details, filling the public space with all this stuff. Assume it's false for a minute: what's the up side of letting this out when the settlement was for these people to go away with their trashy stories, what's the up side of bringing them out now? And what's your plan for disproving them? You're obviously not thinking this through.

    • Spitfire  •  6 mths ago
I agree Cain is a very poor liar and paranoid to boot.
    • Micheal  •  6 mths ago
If he was not guilty, why was all that money paid to keep the women silent? He is quilty as hell and has no respect for women! I dont know why you blind people cant see this!!

cain is a liar and fake, at least sarah palin was entertaining.....this is a joke....
    • Kimberley  •  Milwaukee, United States  •  6 mths ago
If he is so innocent, then why were some of these women paid to keep their mouth's shut? It is not easy for a woman to come forward and file a sexual harassment claim against one of her supervisors.
    • Oliver D  •  6 mths ago
I have been a prosecutor (in two states) for most of my 33-plus years as an attorney. I find that most women in these situations are afraid to come forward. If they dare come forward to tell the truth, then they get viciously slandered and attacked ... kind of like Cain and his supporters are doing here. This makes women afraid to come forward. I see it often, so it does not surprise me.
      • Bella 6 mths ago
I agree Oliver, Those women are under gag orders to, but Cain attacked them constantly! Herman Cain I believe did harass those women!
    • alex G  •  Laredo, United States  •  6 mths ago
he is a liar....in denial pills prescription, and worse of all disrespectful to women in general....in the clarence - hill deal...she was the only one that brought clarence the pressue, but now there are 5 on "Cain get it up"..and five is rare for all of them to be lying...just by the payoff of two means that there was something unappropriate he did....this man is sexual predator and has been one for a long time...he used his position to take advantage of women, and we still has idiots who believe him... No matter what a woman is or has done or is doing that we feel is not proper...she is still a woman....and should be respected and not have a bafoon put his hairy black ugly hand up her dress and touch her family jewels box.....that is a no no...for anyone...even clinton, this idiot, and any other predator

Cain should make a statement under oath, under penalty of perjury, that he never did or said anything of a sexual nature to any of these women. Then he might have a scintilla of credibility.
      • Charles 6 mths ago
Why Cain ? Why not ask the women who are making the accusations to make them "under oath, under the penalty of perjury" ?
    • Ren  •  Bangkok, Thailand  •  6 mths ago
Cain is an ordained Baptist minister. How could anyone even think him capable of these acts?
Oh wait a minute, isn't laying on of hands a spiritual thing? Maybe he was trying to give them Religion. He just got a little too much of the Holy ghost working.

From someone who suffered sexual harassment for years, I can truly appreciate both sides of the argument for these women. Those who reported and those who did not. I wish I had reported it beyond the chain of command and to the Division of Human Rights, as none of his and my superiors intended to remedy the situation (male dominated work force). I would simply have lost my job and then where would my children be? Single mom (notice a pattern).
I wished I had carried a pocket recorder. I wish I kept a journal of dates and instances. But the cold hard truth is, when you're in the center of a maelstrom, you are in survival mode and logic is the farthest thing from your mind. You are merely trying to walk the tight rope.
A funny thing happens. Your health begins to fail from the intense stress. You can't find the exit until you fall through a hole by either being fired because you balked or just quitting with no exit strategy. Perpetrators of harassment will always deny, deny, deny. It's their nature as they can't or won't process how their behavior is effecting another. They are and will always be bullies.
      • Glenn 6 mths ago
Absolutely correct sexual harrassment must be dealt with. I however do not believe his accuser and what she said. She accuses Herman Cain of a assault, I feel she is lying. You are welcome to have your opinion. I am sorry you were harrassed.
      • Mary C 6 mths ago
So Glenn, would it have convinced you if she had been raped? That's the biggest stumbling block for victims of harassment or domestic violence for that matter, too many think you can just leave or just say NO. Retaliation is a very real consequence. What is it that makes you doubt her? The fact that she's not employed? The fact that she's articulate? Assault needs but one time to occur.
      • Anya J 6 mths ago
Same here Mary C, worked in a male dominated workplace, and all SORTS of totally inappropriate things were said to me and about me. It is amazing what men think they can say to someone at the office that they would NEVER let be said to their daughters, wives, mothers, sisters etc...and the crazy thing was at my workplace, the most nastiest, woman hater there was put in charge of the human rights dept, so, you would have had to complain to him...after you sat across the desk from him and read his desk plaque about what the only thing women were good for....fat chance on getting anything changed! The guys in the office would go into the bosses office at lunch and read playboy mags, and then be expected to treat women well when lunch was over. My company even had a guy who bent over backwards to sexually harass women, finally one woman took him to court, he lost, cost the company $3 million bucks in payment to her, not including attnys fees, and he was escorted out of that plant, and driven down the road a couple miles to a sub plant where he then worked because he was a company directors son.

This is the best shot that the Right-Wing has at proving its not the Racist Party? Go ahead, vote for Big Daddy Cain...a serial sexual harrasser as our President. Quite the image Americans want to portray to the world...that Americans are that stupid.

Yeah, thanks for telling us nothing we didn't already not really know.
    • Rose  •  Tulsa, United States  •  6 mths ago
What a mess it would cause if we found out after he was elected that the
accusations were true. If he is innocent he would have no reason to
avoid doing what is necessary to prove he is not guilty of the accusations
Otherwise this will be always be hanging over his head.
    • Rebecca  •  6 mths ago
Suprises me that even one woman would come forward, let alone two making formal complaints. In all my years working in legal for megacorporations... the most shocking behavior is rarely reported because the person reporting it gets fired.

In last nights debate, Cain said he values his integrity and character more than anything To further demonstrate this, a few minutes later he makes a derogatory and sexist remark against former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Apparently his "Integrity and Character" bar is be set very very low.

If you can't keep it in your pants, you aint gonna get invited to the dance!
