Herman Cain: Tennessee mosque builders want Sharia law

Herman Cain said he sides with those opposing the construction of a mosque in Tennessee because he fears the Muslims building the mosque have bad intentions and want to implement Sharia law.

“Our constitution guarantees separation of church and state,” said Cain, a contender for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. “Islam combines church and state. They are using the church part of our First Amendment to infuse their mosque in the community and people in the community don’t like it. They disagree with it. Sharia law is what they are trying to infuse.”

The former Godfather’s Pizza CEO made the comments while on Fox News Sunday. Residents in Murfreesboro have been protesting the building of the worship center planned by the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro. Cain says he has the residents’ back.

Moderator Chris Wallace asked Cain if his skepticism of Muslims in the country is similar to the prejudice he faced growing up as a black man.

“I tell them that is absolutely not true,” Cain said. “Because it’s absolutely totally different … I am willing to take a harder look at people that might be terrorists. That’s what I’m saying.”

He added: “I know that there is a peaceful group of Muslims in this country.” (Herman Cain signs up for Sunday morning grilling)

Wallace asked him if it’s okay for any community to say we don’t want a mosque in our community.

“They could say that … Let’s go back to the fundamental issue that the people are basically saying that they are objecting to. They are objecting to the fact that Islam is both a religion and a set of laws, Sharia law,” Cain said.

“That is the difference between any one of our other traditional religions where it’s just about religious purposes. The people in the community know best. And I happen to side with the people in the community.”

It is the Law of the United State's Constitution, that gives any Religious Group the right to build, worship, and even get approval from their States Health Dept for a Religious Cemeteries for their people to be buried in..No ONE can stop them to build a Mosque or have their own Cemetery. Any Religious Group has that right/ so stop using the tax payers monies and read up on the LAWS of the CONSTITUTION.and get a life.. marge

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

That's from a little thing called the Constitution.

Religion annoys me all to hell and part of me would love for us to have the right to prevent mosques from being built, because then we could get rid of ALL churches and places of worship and get rid of the Westboro Baptist Church (or at the very least tax them), but the fact is, we don't. And if we did, we wouldn't be America.

TeaBaggers love to throw around Constitution this, Founding Fathers that, but even when it comes to the most blatant, cut and dry case of Constitutional interpretation (not that there's a whole lot of ways to interpret that part of the first amendment), they can't let that get in the way of their racism and xenophobia.

Your hatred for the Tea Party outweighs the sensibility or your feeble argument...ANY sect, religious or otherwise trying to enact laws in America is unconstitutional.

What's the difference from the Tea Party and Republicans again?

How many Churches are built in the Arab/Muslim World, of the Middle East. Or even allowed to practive their Christian religion? Yes it is a one sided situation, they want, but not allow in their country
      • this is a TURING TEST 10 mths ago
And, of course, the best way to not be like them is to be just like them.

I would hope our country would hold itself to a higher standard than Saudi Arabia or Iran. We don't persecute people for worshiping the wrong god in the US.

there are thousands and thousands of churches throughout the arab world. you are ignorant. did you know there are synagogues in Iran. so ignorant.

BAQ: you need religion to be moral? Sounds superficial to me.

Islam is more a political party like the KKK and the American Nazi Party than a religion. Italy doesn't does not recognize Islam as a religion, so there isn't the trouble there as elsewhere in the world and in the US.
    • RickyVVV  •  10 mths ago
It is interesting to see right wing Christians imposing their hateful attitudes toward another religious group all in the name of creating a safe America. These are the same people who have allowed the invasion of our privacy at airports, in our bedrooms, and now in our churches/mosques and synagogues. It is extremely hypocritical to state that the fear here is Muslims trying to enact Sharia law, while Christians have made many attempts to impose their biblical law by desiring to put up the 10 commandments in government buildings, changing our anthems to include god, and trying to make changes to the constitution to include biblical law. Since when do elected officials commit to religious activities during government business? It seems that many of these GOP want to be presidents have found the wrong “calling”. Instead of running for public office they should become preachers. The real concern for America and its constitutional fears comes from the Christian zealots, not Islam.
      • this is a TURING TEST 10 mths ago
Very well said, Ricky. Couldn't agree more. The problem is not with the Islamic extremist minority, but with the Christian extremist majority imposing their agendas on everybody.

The problem is that groups who came to America came to become Americans and assimilate into the culture. Today, most come not to assimilate, but to make us change to fit them.

It is no different than when the Europeans invaded and changed the American Indian nations, except now it is happening to us.
      • Derek 'Flagrant Foul& ... 10 mths ago
I guess that's why there were neighborhoods like Little Italy, Chinatown, or German or Polish speaking neighborhoods in cities in 19th Century America.
      • Berliner Herz 10 mths ago
You're kidding, right, Room? Europeans came to America and assimilated with the native people they found here!? They came, stole, killed, and sent them to reservations.
      • Room 10 mths ago
Chinatown was due to white discrimination keeping Chinese separate. Most groups congregate among others from their culture. But most came to be Americans. They stayed were they were comfortable until they learned enough to be comfortable in other areas. They didn't try to change the national language to German, Polish, or Chinese. But many today want to do that. They want their laws and their language, not US laws or speaking English.

Yes, Berliner, they took from the natives. And that is what the current invaders will do to those living here now.

The problem for me is as American Indian, our ways were illegal until the late 1970s. Even now the government refuses to consider our beliefs to be a religion. So although I don't care for islam, I have to respect their right to believe whatever way they see fit. Isn't that what it should be all about,,,respecting other people's religion just as they should respect yours.
I don't understand these big world religions that have to have everyone all fit in the same peg all believing the samething when any reasonable person knows that these beliefs are very internalized and NO ONE believes exactly the same, even when they belong to the same church! When it comes down to it,,,it has to be about power and control and not really about the creator and how we practice our beliefs!
BTW One small little clue folks,,,if someone has their hand out for payment (tithes & etc) IT ISN'T REAL!!! Real spirituality is found inside yourself in the quite meditations of your mind and YOU CAN'T BUY IT and no one else can give it to you. Not for any amount of money!
So quite fighting over religious beliefs because it's all about controlling and milking the masses.

I guess Cain and his right wing mob forget that the history of the United States of America includes the freedom to practice one’s own religion without the government interfering. For a group that swears to follow the Constitution and the Bible they sure pick and choose which passages they want to follow and ignore what they want. I guess Cain forget he is not considered a whole person and he, his wife, and his family are not supposed to vote. I guess unless you are not a White land owner you are not allowed to vote. I guess he forgot if you do not love or respect your fellow man and if you ever tell a lie you are a sinner.

I don’t like the right wing telling me what to but I respect their right to openly discuss their ideas. I dislike Nazis, skinheads, and communists but respect they have a right to talk about it. What I don’t accept is any group trying to push their agenda on everyone because that is un-American.

Who made the right wing God to be all-seeing and all-knowing of my bedroom, my religion, my relationship with God, my relationship with my family my relationship with my wife, etc? This is not the Dark Ages, this is not Iran and we are not a theocracy.

The facts are Muslims fought for the Colonies in the Revolutionary War and for the USA in every war since. So have Christians, Jews, and Hindus, Mormons, Gays, African Americans, Asians, American Indians, members of the KKK, the Birch Society and others have fought for the USA. The fabric of such a diverse population is one of our strengths.

The bottom line is the unless you are an American Indian you are an alien to this country and according to the right wing Christian agenda all aliens should be sent home. This is America, love it or leave it!
    • U MAD BRO  •  10 mths ago
Keep the muslims law to the muslim countries. USA's not their country so they should shut the F up.
    • Marc OC  •  10 mths ago
Cain is a right wing Christian trying to push his agenda on the rest of us. The right wing is our Taliban trying to run our lives and have their noses in our bedrooms and private business. For a group that swears by the bible and Constitution they sure try to break a lot of what these documents stand for. Shame on them and shame on anyone that wants to turn America into a right wing Christine theocracy. We might as well move to Iran, at least they don't try to hide it.

Why should be cater to this group when they hate out country and way of life. If then prove to me that they want peace and harmony and are willing to obey and uphold our laws as US citizens, or applying to be citizens, then maybe I can accept. Until then. NO WAY!!
    • le  •  10 mths ago
One irrefutable fact we know for sure.Muslims and Jihadists love Democrats,Liberals and Progressives. Why? They have the same values, they dislike Americans who fight for the Constitutional rights of Americans and believes in the greatness of America. There is a reason why most Muslims live in Muslims countries and there is a reason why Christians live in their countries and perhaps the twain should never meet,Why?? Because we do believe in two different Gods which is the major problem. There God says,"Convert or kill all non Muslims', and our God says, Love your neighbors as yourself. The difference is unambiguous.
    • BryanT  •  10 mths ago
Islamists make up less than 3% of the vote in Tennessee, the risk of Sharia Law being implemented based on a mosque being built is zero. We have hundreds of mosques in the country, and not even a mention of Sharia law until it became the republican rallying cry. There are laws associated with Christianity too, they are called commandments. Breaking many of those commandments is not illegal (some, like thou shalt not kill, or murder, are). He seems to be trying to create fear in order to unify in opposition to something that isn't a threat.
    • Sham  •  10 mths ago
This is unbelievable that anyone in their right mind would agree with Herman Cain. He is an ignorant idiot. Anyone who is this intolerant, should not even be considered for the job of the President of the United States. I pray that Allah grants him tolerance.
    • John Buck  •  10 mths ago
The Talibanic application of Shariah, which most sane people would have healthy objections to, is not representative of the entire Muslim community. There are some very nice articles that accurately explain what the Sacred Law is such as 'Understanding Islamic Law' (http://www.islamicsupremecouncil.org/understanding-islam/legal-rulings/52-understanding-islamic-law.html), 'What is a Fatwa?' (http://www.islamicsupremecouncil.org/understanding-islam/legal-rulings/44-what-is-a-fatwa.html), ‘Jihad: A Misunderstood Concept from Islam' (http://www.islamicsupremecouncil.org/understanding-islam/legal-rulings/44-what-is-a-fatwa.html), and others besides. But more to the point, what proof does Herman Cain (R) have to support his libelous claims apart from slander and calumny? If he has incontestable evidence then put it up.
    • Duke of Earl  •  10 mths ago
just listen to the libturds, they got a marxist for a president, and now they want the state to have sharia law.
    • B. A. Smith  •  10 mths ago
You can not separate the religion out of their laws. There is no problem with the Muslim faith BUT the Muslim faith is interwined with their own laws. By saying they have a right to have their Muslim religion you are saying they have a right to change our laws - you can not separate the two.
    • Richard Tater  •  10 mths ago
I agree with Cain.We should be allowed to ban mosquesin our communities along with church's and synagougs and any other type of religion. They are responsible for more deaths then anything else in human history.
