Sheriff’s officials have announced another in-custody death investigation of an inmate. This time, a Hesperia man who suffered a medical emergency.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reported that at 9:23 p.m. on Thursday, deputies and medical staff at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto responded to a male inmate who was unresponsive inside a cell.

The inmate, identified as Eli Dalton Baker, 33, was housed alone in a cell and suffered a medical emergency. He was given medical aid, including CPR, by medical staff and deputies, sheriff’s officials said.

Paramedics responded and rendered life-saving measures. Baker was later pronounced dead, according to the sheriff's report.

The Sheriff's Specialized Investigations Division responded and assumed the investigation.

Baker was transported to the SBC Sheriff-Coroner’s Office, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death.

Sheriff’s officials did not say if Hernandez suffered from a medical condition or if anyone else was involved in the incident.

Baker was arrested on Aug. 23 by the SBC Probation Department for a probation violation. He was booked into the High Desert Detention Center where he remained.

Other in-custody deaths 

There have been nearly a dozen in-custody deaths since September 2021, sheriff’s officials reported.

The most recent death was reported on Oct. 24, when sheriff’s detectives investigated the death of 27-year-old Stephan Hernandez at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

Deputies at the facility discovered Hernandez unconscious in his cell. Deputies and jail medical staff performed CPR on the inmate, who was transported to a local Kaiser Permanente Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, sheriff’s officials said.
