Hezbollah seeks to reassure Lebanon over probe

BEIRUT (AP) — The leader of Hezbollah sought to reassure Lebanon on Thursday that he has no interest in stirring up trouble over an international investigation that has targeted members of his Shiite militant group.

Lebanon is deeply divided over a U.N.-backed tribunal investigating the 2005 assassination of Rafik Hariri, a former prime minister and billionaire statesman. There were concerns the country could be facing a political crisis after Lebanon agreed to fund the court this week, against the wishes of Hezbollah, the most powerful military and political force in Lebanon.

But on Thursday, Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said he will put the country's interests ahead of everything else.

"Although we reject the legitimacy and funding and cooperation with this tribunal, we will not cause problems in the country and we will put national interests above any other consideration," Nasrallah said in a televised appearance.

The investigation into Hariri's death — and the degree to which the Lebanese authorities should cooperate with it — has become one of the most divisive issues in Lebanese politics in recent years.

Hezbollah strongly denies any link to the crime and says the court is a Western tool to strike at the anti-Israel group.

Hezbollah and its allies, which hold a majority in the Cabinet, were expected to block the funding for the court during a vote this week.

But on Wednesday, Prime Minister Najib Mikati said he already had secured Lebanon's $36 million share of funding. Mikati did not say how he secured the money and Nasrallah also said he did not know the details.

According to official Ottoman Turk census figures of 1882, in the entire "Palestine" (on BOTH sides of the Jordan River), there were only 141,000 Muslims, both Arab and non-Arab. This number was to skyrocket to 650,000 Arabs by 1922, a 450% increase in only 40 years.
By 1938 that number would become over 1 million or an 800% increase in only 56 years. Population growth was especially high in areas where Jews lived.
THEY WERE LOOKING FOR WORK OPPORTUNITIES AND BETTER LIFE.

So you're saying that its ok to force people off who have been living there for 129 years or longer? Oh right, the 'chosen people' crap! How can I forget?!

COrP, im Jewish, and the only time I hear about "the chosen people" is when YOU claim that we say it, so cut the #$%$ and acknowledge our presence in the area WAY before you even knew about it.

nuts you said that Syrian officials do not take their money outside of Syria, why get a foreign passport then when he has the diplomatic passport? Lies as usual.

Rami Makhlouf is thought to have attempted in 2004 to take over the Mercedes concession in Syria by ensuring a law was passed denying Mercedes the right to import parts unless Makhlouf was made the exclusive agent for Mercedes in Syria. Mercedes wanted to keep the Sanqar family who had the concession since the 1960s.[10] Mercedes stopped all activity in Syria until the dispute was resolved, the Mercedes concession is now once again controlled by the Sanqar family.[11]

Makhlouf's current business interests are extensive. He is the majority owner of Cham Holding which has investments in luxury tourism, restaurants, and real estate through Bena Properties. Cham Holding also controls Syrian Pearl Airlines, the first private airline to be allowed in the country. He is also invested in several private banks established in Syria, such as the International Islamic Bank of Syria, Byblos Bank, Al Baraka Bank, International Bank of Qatar, Cham Bank, Bank of Jordan in Syria; in insurance companies; and in financial services companies, such as Cham Capital. Like his father, Mohammed Makhlouf, he is active in the oil sector, via the British oil company Gulfsands Petroleum. He is also invested in real estate companies such Sourouh, Fajr, Al Batra, and Al Hada'iq; in tourism companies such as Al Mada'in; in media companies such as daily Al Watan, radio/television station Ninar and satellite station Dunya TV; in advertising companies such as Promedia; in education companies such as the Chouwayfat schools; in industry through the Eltel Middle East company; and in Public Work's companies such as Ramak TP.[7][12] Rami Makhlouf has extensive land holdings in the U.S. Virgin Islands, which were the subject of court litigation. As a result of this litigation Rami's U.S. holdings were transferred to his brother Ihab. The Makhloufs also have a monopoly on the import of tobacco into Syria.[13]
Makhlouf maintains a close relationship with Bushra al-Assad, Bashar's older sister, and her husband Assef Shawkat. He also operates a number of different business projects in Lebanon with Maher al-Assad, Bashar's younger brother. There are reports of tensions between the two, which is considered why parts of the Makhlouf business were shifted in 2005 to Dubai. Some observers believe the transfers were made because the Makhloufs were worried that they were going to be made the scapegoats of an anti-corruption propaganda campaign.[13]

The Cypriot interior minister said Wednesday the government was revoking the passport of Syrian tycoon Rami Makhlouf because of EU sanctions imposed against him over the crackdown in Syria.

Neoclis Sylikiotis told journalists that as soon as he was informed by the foreign ministry that Mr. Makhlouf, a maternal cousin of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, was on the blacklist, he “gave immediate instructions to start proceedings to revoke” his Cypriot nationality.

Mr. Makhlouf was only granted citizenship on January 4, after the cabinet approved a request from the foreign ministry based on his having met the special criteria to obtain a passport.

Syrian support of Terrorists in Lebanon is coming to an end and the head of the snake is looking for a way out, perhaps permanent residence is Iran will do him just fine.
    • Realist  •  5 mths ago
If Nasrallah really put Lebanon's needs first--he would disband the Hezbollah. No terrorist group should have more weapons than its government.
      • Robert 5 mths ago
Realist, the majority of Lebanese still see Hezbollah as the legitimate resistence movement to Zionazi occupation, remember, the Zionazis still occupy parts of Lebanese territory; you should be asking when Zionazis leave the territory will Hezbollah disband?

Seriously Robert? The Sheeba Farms I'm guessing that you are referring to? This miniscule, and irrelevant sliver of land if how Hezbollah justifies having a more powerful military in Lebanon than the Lebanese people/government? Seriously... give your head a shake.

Also, Israel won the land in the 1967 war. It's an easy lesson really: Don't want to risk losing land? Then don't provoke a war... Too much common sense there.
      • A Yahoo! User 5 mths ago
Robert another liar propagandist you are. Th shebaa farm is an excuse even the Lebanese Govt is no bothered about it.
Hizbullah work for the Syrian regime and the Iranian not to defend Lebanon but to destabilize Lebanon. Syria has always had Lebanon in sight in the the 70ies instigated a civil war and succeeded in occupying the country for 15 years.and the only people that opposed the Syrian being kicked out of Lebanon were Hizbullah and now you idiot you want to say that they are the defender of Lebanon.

The only worthwhile reporting on Hezbollah would be how many of it's terrorists were killed today. Unless reporting a body count, please refrain from giving these muvvafackers any ink.

ridicoulous. To be called Ridicoulous in the arab world is the

Whats all the grief with teh fatso Hariri? Lebanon's national debt was 0 when he bought his way to power. By the time he was smoked it had grown bigger than the national GDP. Unfortunate his family was not in that ride with him.

Mr Nasrallah of Huzballah , suddenly you have decided to put Lebanon interest above all , What a Joke, or is it because you know that your Lord and master Assad is on his way out and you do not want to be left in the cold
.As for your other Lord and master the Iranian Ayatullah you know that you will be cut off from him when Assad goes.
You have had your days remember the PLO. in Lebanon where are they now but we are still there and we shall always remain there.
