Higher prices don't deter Thanksgiving travelers

CHICAGO (AP) — Whether on the highway or at home, Americans will pay more to celebrate Thanksgiving this year. But higher gas prices and costlier airfare are not stopping millions of people from traveling for the holiday.

About 42.5 million people are expected to drive, fly or ride trains to their Thanksgiving destinations, according to travel tracker AAA. That's the highest number since the start of the recession.

Ninety percent of them will hit the road, and it won't be cheap. Drivers will pay almost 20 percent more for gas, which has reached an average of $3.42 a gallon.

Air travelers have been hit, too. The average round-trip airfare for the top 40 U.S. routes is $212, up 20 percent from last year. Rail tickets on most one-way Amtrak trips have climbed 2 to 5 percent. Hotel and motel rates are also up slightly.

George Gorham and his fiance, Patricia Horner, weren't deterred. They flew across the country to visit Gorham's son at North Carolina's Fort Bragg. They used frequent-flier miles and planned to visit tourist attractions in the nation's capital along the way.

Horner said they still would have made the trip without the miles, but "it would have been more painful."

Some motorists who tried to get an early start along the Pennsylvania Turnpike found themselves stopped by — or stuck in — a gooey mess after a leaking valve on a tanker truck spread driveway sealant along nearly 40 miles of highway. Officials said at least 150 vehicles were disabled and an unknown number of others were damaged Tuesday night.

"Now we have to turn around and go back home," Laura Frick, who was traveling from Cleveland to New Jersey for the holiday, told WTAE-TV. "It's horrible."

Turnpike workers who peeled up the sticky puddles, then covered them with sand to hasten drying, had traffic moving normally again by Wednesday morning.

Travelers also were at the mercy of the weather.

Heavy rains and scattered thunderstorms prompted flood warnings and closed some roads across swaths of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York early Wednesday. Snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain to make for treacherous driving and thousands of power outages across parts of New England and upstate New York.

Flights arriving at Philadelphia International Airport early Wednesday were experiencing delays between 30 and 45 minutes "and increasing" due to low cloud cover, but the Federal Aviation Administration reported few other early disruptions.

Plenty of people also were staying home.

Damian Buchwald of Buffalo, N.Y., picked up a second job earlier this year. His new work schedule has helped pay the bills but leaves him without time to travel to Connecticut to spend the holiday with his wife's family.

This year, the couple and their teenage son, Raven, will celebrate Thanksgiving with his mother, neighbors and friends in town.

"When you can't travel and people can't travel to you, you gather your closest friends. And that way nobody has to pay an arm and a leg, and everyone can eat well," Buchwald said.

But having relatives over for dinner is becoming more expensive, too.

A 16-pound turkey and all the trimmings will cost an average of $49.20, a 13 percent jump from last year, or about $5.73 more, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation, which says grocers have raised prices to keep pace with higher-priced commodities.

In Pawtucket, R.I., Jackie Galinis was among those looking for help to put a proper meal on the table. She stopped at a community center this week seeking a donated food basket. But by the time she arrived, all 300 turkeys had been claimed.

So Galinis, an unemployed retail worker, will make do with what's in her apartment. "We'll have to eat whatever I've got, so I'm thinking chicken," she said.

Then her eyes lit up. "Actually, I think I've got red meat in the freezer, some corned beef. We could do a boiled dinner."

Carole Goldsmith of Fresno, Calif., decided she didn't need to have a feast, even if she could still afford it.

Goldsmith, an administrator at a community college in Coalinga, Calif., said she typically hosts an "over-the-top meal" for friends and family. This year, she canceled the meal and donated a dozen turkeys to two homeless shelters. She plans to spend Thursday volunteering before holding a small celebration Friday with soup, bread "and lots of gratitude."

"I think everybody is OK with it," she said. "They understand. Everybody is in a different place than they were a year ago."

CORRECTION: Higher prices don't deter Thanksgiving travelers who actually have money.

For decades the corporate media have programmed Americans to DO all this nonsense for an economic holiday. There is no actual NEED to travel, eat thousands of calories of fat saturated food, and then shop like mad on Friday. If you want to do this, fine, but please realize that you do not HAVE to. Nothing bad will happen if you do not, and you will save a LOT of money!

Geez, just tell us that your mommy didn't let you have any dressing at Thanksgiving and stop your whining.

My 'Mommy' is deceased, you jerk. You have no clue what I am saying. Too bad you can't get near it.

I agree with Mark. And the same message applies to all that crazy Christmas spending. Why are we buying gifts for people who dont need the stuff we buy? Most of the stuff we get for gifts ends up in our garage sale anyway. It is ridiculous.

The fleecing of Americans continues...Why did gas go up 3 cents a gallon last night? There is NO shortage of Oil or Gasoline according to the Dept.of Energy but then again we can't believe everything the government says anyway. No one will ever convince me that we consumers are not being manipulated with these inflated gas prices.

It must be that darned Bush's fault.. Ho wait, Obama is the president now. Or is Obama the new Bush? I mean they do things the same.
      • Joseph M 6 mths ago
First, guys like Gene are the furthest thing from helpful. Second, it's pretty complicated. The price of gas is a reflection of our weak dollar, which is that way due to our deficit and debt. When Bush decided to have two UNFUNDED wars, we ended up paying for it with eroded dollars. Oil is priced in Dollars, therefore, we are paying for the wars surreptitiously with each gallon of gas we buy.

Prices are up everywhere. Food is skyrocketing, holiday travel is something you save for, eating is everyday and life. Oil prices will start moving up just in time for the heating season. Don't get all warm and fuzzy over the spending just buckle your chin strap because it's just starting. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I had no choice but to go to Florida for my granddaughter's wedding in May and I had to take what little savings I had to go. I am still feeling the financial pinch as I am old and have very little money. I think this traveling is a bunch of nonsense in most cases..not all, because some people wouldn't see their relatives otherwise, but this spend, spend, spend mentality has got to stop sometime.

Why are prices higher? GREED by the corporations of the wall street greed grab conspiracy coupled with a bought off government who controls the people by Tyranny.
      • Steven 6 mths ago
Riiiight. Prices are higher because of the Fed's current liberal economic policy that doubled the monetary supply through QE1&2 causing the dollar to lose about 20% in value.
      • A Yahoo! User 6 mths ago
Thanksgiving 2012 we are going to see much higher inflation of prices because the dollar's decline will speed up exponentially.

I wish EVERYONE a happy thanksgiving, and I hope your celebration plans enclude all your loved ones. I have particular good wishes for those of you who are doing something special for the less fortunate in our midst. And may the seasons warm feelings of love for our fellow man indure for the entire year.

Yesterday the headline was about how we will be cutting back for Thanksgiving, then today this headline basically says the opposite. The media cannot be trusted!

If the economy continues on this way, no one will have to drive or fly anywhere to see their relatives. They will all be living in our spare bedroom.

I would much rather spend what little money I have left on family than give it to the government

Well, the premise of the story is a bit far fetched. I'd wait until later next week after all the beans are counted before I believe AP's editorial speculation.

People if we keep on paying out these high prices we will all be broke real soon! If we would stop using so much gas & let it pile up on them it would come WAY down. It's basic supply & demand. To much supply with little demand will bring lower gas prices & everything will fall into place. Stores can sell cheaper, employ more ppl & pay better. Let them keep there $3-$4 a gallon gas, I sure am.
