The data included in the reporting includes preliminary incident reports supplied by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The reporting represented includes the metro area of Indianapolis and also a breakdown of crime rates for the neighborhoods with the highest incidents of crime this year.

    The reporting shows that there has been a significant increase in almost every type of crime this year when compared to the same time period last year. Only rape and criminal homicide are lower than the previous year. The increase in crime has shifted the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's focus to cracking down on the high crime areas. Frank Straub, the Indianapolis public safety director likened the new concept called zone policing to war stating, "When we fight a war or battle, we don't just send our troops out, we send them to where the enemy is located."

    Within the six districts of the Indianapolis metro area there are dozens of neighborhoods with varying crime rates. Using the M.A.P.S., Mapping Application for Public Safety, HomeSecurityGuru.com analyzed the most recent crime incidents reported from January 1 - February 11, 2012.
