Based on the preliminary reports overall Boston has had a drop in property crimes and a rise in violent crimes since the beginning of 2012. City officials have been working to decrease violent crime in the city with programs such as 'Text a Tip' which was launched in 2007. The latest efforts include a multimedia campaign to increase awareness for their Crime Stoppers program which encourages community members to become proactive in helping to report and reduce crimes. In a televised announcement Edward Davis, the Boston Police Department Commissioner, said "the goal of the multimedia campaign is to increase awareness in the Crime Stoppers campaign. . . since 2007 the Crime Stoppers Unit has received close to 4,000 tips as a result of this campaign I'm confident that the momentum of community involvement will continue."
