Homophobia Starts in Elementary School; Teachers Do Little

Clare Davidson-Sherman, the adopted daughter of Karen Davidson-Fisher, has "several mommies" -- her biological one, her adoptive mother's former partner who has joint custody, and now Davidson-Fisher's legal wife.

The 8-year-old has come face-to-face with bullying in her Omaha, Neb., public school. One of her third-grade classmates used a derogatory and "sing-songy" tone as she taunted, "Clare has lesbian moms!"

"She was upset," said Davidson-Fisher, a 39-year-old former mental health therapist. "But the teacher talked to the kid. There are at least three kids in my daughter's class who have same-sex parents. It's something that needs to be taken care of."

Since then, bullying hasn't been an issue for Clare.

Now, the first survey of its kind, "Playgrounds and Prejudice: Elementary School Climate in the United States," reveals that homophobia is pervasive in elementary schools and, unlike Clare's school, most teachers do little to intervene.

At this age, bullies use words to attack those who are different, but if not curtailed early, warn advocates, verbal teasing turns to violence at the middle school and high school level.

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) examined homophobia and gender nonconformity among 1,065 students in grades 3 to 6 and 1,099 teachers in grades K to 6 in a survey conducted by Harris Interactive.

Students and teachers were asked about their school climates, including hearing biased remarks, witnessing and experiencing bullying, as well as lessons they received on bullying, gender issues and family diversity.

An estimated 45 percent of students and 49 percent of teachers said that the word "gay" was most often used in a negative way, for example, "That's so gay."

Many also report regularly hearing students make homophobic remarks, such as "fag" or "lesbo," and negative comments about race and ethnicity. Three quarters of the students report that children are called names, made fun of or bullied with at least some regularity.

Victims were most often targeted because of their body size, not being good at sports, how well they did their schoolwork, not conforming to gender roles or because others thought they were gay.

But only 24 percent of teachers report having personally engaged in efforts to create a safe and supportive environment for families with LGBT parents, even though nearly half of them regularly heard students making homophobic remarks.

Nearly 1 in 10 of these elementary students revealed they do not always conform to traditional gender norms, according to the survey: "Either they are boys who others sometimes think, act or look like a girl, or they are girls who others sometimes think, act or look like a boy."

Those students also say that they are less likely to feel safe at school.

"Words like 'sissy,' 'fairy,' 'faggot' and 'dike' are weapons of choice for children who want to hurt their peers," said GLSEN's executive director Eliza Byard. "Learning words can wound someone and turn into patterns of bullying.… It can be painful and limiting for children who are outside some artificial norm."

Studies in grades K through 12 reveal that when children reach middle school, 40 percent of all LGBT students report having been physically assaulted because of gender expression or identity.

"As a society, we have been witnessing for the past couple of years the dramatic evidence of what can happen when bias and bullying are allowed to mature and develop through the school years," said Byard.

LGBT Students at Higher Risk of Suicide

The National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center estimated that nearly 30 percent of American youth are either a bully or a target of bullying.

In addition, researchers at the Yale School of Medicine, in a review of studies from 13 countries, found signs of an apparent connection between bullying, being bullied and suicide.

GLSEN's own research indicates that LGBT youth may be more likely to think about and attempt suicide than heterosexual teens.

Just last September, 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer killed himself after a year of tormenting by bullies at his Buffalo, N.Y., school. Students posted comments online such as, "JAMIE IS STUPID, GAY, FAT ANND [sic] UGLY. HE MUST DIE!"

And in 2009, Carl Joseph Hoover-Walker was found dead, hanging from an extension cord in his Springfield, Mass., home after school bullies repeatedly called him "gay." The 11-year-old Boy Scout was ruthlessly teased, despite his mother's pleas to his charter school to address the problem.

"This problem is not going away," said his mother, Sirdeaner L. Walker, 46, who was instrumental in enacting anti-bullying legislation in Massachusetts. "And even if they survive elementary and high school, the scars are long-lasting."

Walker said her son's teachers failed to act, but now state law requires schools to have a plan of action that involves parents of both victim and bully, as well as teachers.

"Your child may be afraid to come forward and name bullies because they are afraid [the bullies] will not be punished and dealt with and [the child] will be attacked," she said. "When you don't handle the problem, it gets worse."

To help teachers intervene, GLSEN has published a new resource, "Ready, Set, Respect," in partnership with the National Association of Elementary School Principals and the National Association for the Education of Young People.

The kit helps teachers address biased language, LGBT families and gender nonconformity, issues that until now, many teachers have seen as controversial and "too frightening to take on, particularly in the younger grades," according to Byard.

"Issues emerge in the earliest years and need to be addressed forthrightly," she said.

According to the survey, 85 percent of teachers said they had received professional development on diversity or multicultural issues, but fewer than half had ever had specific training on gender issues.

But many teachers do not intervene because they are afraid of "push back" from parents and others in the community, according to Peter DeWitt, a New York elementary school principal and author of "Dignity for All: Safeguarding LGBT Students."

"More and more kids, especially in our public schools, are coming from diverse families and some have had no exposure to LGBT people," he said. "In my school there was a hate blog for awhile."

"Nobody's pushing an agenda on kids," he said. "It's about accepting and creating an inclusive climate where all kids are accepted. It's not just about gay kids. When they go to the work force, they will be exposed to all types of people. It's a skill you need to know."

For Clare Davidson-Sherman, teacher intervention helped. In fact, she now goes to slumber parties with her former bully.

"It's important for kids to see that they need to take care of each other and help each other out, rather than take each other down," said her mother.

"I don't worry too much," said Davidson-Fisher about what the future will bring. "I think Clare will continue to bring stuff home and when she sees it's taken care of, she doesn't need to be afraid. She can tell us, and it will get handled."

"We weren't sure how the teacher would handle it and we were also trying to talk to her about things she could say to protect herself a bit," she said, then laughed. "When someone says, 'Your mom is a lesbian,' you can say, 'And?'"

Unless you have a child this age, you cannot understand how difficult it is to get the school to practice what they preach. The kids who bully know exactly what they can get away with and when. Then, if your child is the victim, the bully lies and gets out of any punishment. The school's principals know who the troublemakers are but their hands are always tied because the liar/bully's mother is usually a total psycho. If the parents do not get a grip on the problem when the kid is about 5-6, they end up in more trouble as they get older and then the police are involved. Then it's that same psycho mother who's sitting there in court saying, "why him? I don't get it?" after their kid is accused of stealing, assault or whatever.

Teachers should step in to stop ALL taunting and belittling behavior! It doesn't matter why or for what, the teacher should simply state that the behavior is inappropriate and will not be tolerated.
      • Truthsayer 4 mths ago
Sorry. "Oh, Billy, that type of inapproriate behavior won't be tolerated. We can't really do anything to stop you, but I can whine about your behavior" = FAILURE
"Billy [grabbing the little @%#$ by the ear], we're going to take a little trip to the Principal's office for a public paddling. Let's see how you like bullying after that!" = SUCCESS. LIBERAL PC/MORAL RELATIVIST HUMANISM IS AN UTTER FAILURE!!!!!

The title should be "Hate Starts At Home". You don't learn it from your peers. You learn it from your parents.

Thumbs up a hundred thousand times! It truly begins (or stops) at home.

Bullying should be stopped by the teachers in the classroom. Parents need to be more in tune with their children as well. When I was in school, the most bullying I witnessed (to others and not from myself) were to overweight / underweight kids, kids with glasses, poor kids, minority children (race), tall / short kids, red haired children, etc... My point is, while I do not think that bullying someone for being gay or having gay parents is right, the real issue here is to stop bullying (for any reason) period. How about make this the focus to target more problem areas.

Oh, and I forgot religion. I remember one girl getting bullied relentlessly because she quietly bowed her head to pray before she ate lunch. She was a good student and didn't bother anyone either.

I wonder what Jesus would think of someone who would treat a child poorly because of ANYTHING the child's parents do?
      • IanF 4 mths ago
then again, I doubt jesus would walk by a homeless person and tell them to "just get a job"

i guess i'm really fortunate to have been brought up to not judge or hate people for their ethnicity, religion, skin color, whatever. gay people can be fine people just like anybody else. and they can be jerks like anybody else. i don't care to know about what anybody does in the bedroom anyway, gay or straight.

        - your thinking is wrong because what is wrong is wrong regardless. This is a perverted age - if someone is in a sewer...you don't just leave them in it but should
try to get them out because true love is corrective always.

Discrimination is taught at home so the opposite must be taught there too. I'm a teacher and I do everything possible to make my classroom a safe, caring, and accepting environment. Students who name call do so mostly when adults aren't around and they learn it at home. Parents need to watch what they say around their kids. I would happily take care of the problem in my classroom, but when I do, parents of the bully will complain. If you don't like the way I do YOUR job, do it yourself!!!

Again with blaming the teachers. Are you kidding me? If we say anything, we are promoting a lifestyle, if we don't, we are promoting bullying? Clearly the author isn't an educator and doesn't know squat about this issue. Where do you think children get such hateful attitudes? Not from teachers that's for sure! It is from their parents, but again, that must be the teacher's faults too.

"Homophobia?" does anyone truly FEAR gays?
    • CourtneyB  •  4 mths ago
To all the people mentoining GOD & parents... In church I learned that GOD loves all his children. Which taught me I should try to love but always accept everyone. My parents taught me not to be hateful. Because of how I was brought up I am not a hateful ignort person. I feel sorry for you hateful ignortant people.
I am not saying anyone has to agree with anyone elses lifestyle but you need to accept it and deal with it and stop hating everyone who does not agree with our lifestyle! People need to stop preeching hate. Even if you dont like or agree someone you should teach them that they will run into so many different people in this world and they should learn to accept everyone for who they are. You would be shocked what can be learned when you just accept everyone.

ANY type of bully follows the example of their parents. Figure it out from there.
    • Just Me, Richard  •  4 mths ago
Homophobia starts in the home, where heterosexual parents refuse to educate their children or discipline them. Hazing, teasing and bullying on ANY topic needs to be addressed by parents. What is worse, is when prejudices of ALL sorts are deliberately taught to children by their parents. I can tell you this from experience, having grown up where both parents spouted off about "n*ggers" and "homos" [among others] all the time.

It is despicable for teachers to tolerate bullying in any form. They should know better. The gay issue is especially sensitive because of the suicide rate of victims. This is a huge problem for us all and we need to find a good solution. The best solution is no tolerance of bullying in any form and counseling for those who are uncomfortable to the point of violence about issues they are taught to hate.

If bullying gets to the point that it's a dangerous situation for a boy just simply to walk into a classroom, than we need radical changes in our educational system. Private, in home, educators may be the wave of the future.

This does not start in kindergarten, it starts at home!
Leave sexuality out of the classroom. If children say inappropriate things blame it on the parents and require the parents to fix things at home.
8 year olds should not know who sleeps with who. Keep the bedroom door closed and let children be children.

All these people saying that teaching tolerance and anti-bullying is pro-gay and therefore we shouldn't do it are extreme bigots! Maybe we should stop celebrating MLK day because it is bro-black and therefore bad? People who are different from you are just different, no better, no worse. All are equal!

Boy it amazes me that the main subject has been lost with all the #$%$ hate. If the little girl had sang Clare has a jap for a daddy or Clare has a #$%$ for a daddy . You guys would be all over it like white on rice and scream racism and bullying but nooooooo, because her parents just happen to be Lesbians you have to jump all over the so called "gay" issue and completely ignore the bullying. I bet most of you also claim to be Christians if so start acting like a Christian and stop being so hateful. This child was bullied and most of you could careless about the scars bullying leaves on a child. Please get your act together and realize you have no right to judge anyone. Only GOD has that right.
