    Honduras passes wiretap, bike laws to stem crime

    TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — The Honduran Congress has passed bills allowing authorities to wiretap the telephone conversations, emails and bank accounts of suspected criminals and temporarily banning motorcycles from carrying passengers.

    The two initiatives are aimed at stemming a wave of drug violence and organized crime that has plagued the Central American nation.

    The lawmakers passed the measures Thursday, just days after a radio news host and a former adviser to the government were fatally shot by gunmen on motorcycles, presumably by shooters who were riding as passengers. The passenger ban is for six months.

    President Porfirio Lobo is expected to sign both bills into law.

      Not drug violence - drug LAW violence. It's called prohibition. Hmmmm, I seem to remember another time in recent history when a substance was demonized and outlawed, and then gangs and violence ensued. Lessee, oh, that's right, it was called alcohol prohibiton, and last time I checked, the gangs were shooting at each other and innocent bystanders because they were intoxicated; they we're doing so to settle business disputes, etc.

      Gosh, same thing today. Wonder why the media can't even mention the word "prohbition" in even 1 article that is about....prohibition.

      Winning! What happens after six months and it's proven that taking away civil liberties completely failed to stop the violence - take away more civil liberties?

        Taking away civil liberties? ... these are anti crime measures to try to cut down on the highest homicide rate in the world! What are we supposed to do .... nothing?
        The police, govt, military etc .... need to get tough .... thee is no choice ...

        Civil Liberties? Let me guess, you are a blind guy from Emeryville, who doesn't live in Honduras and has no idea what's taking place in this country plague with drug violence; yet, you think you know it all or that other countries are and run like ours.
