Hotel workers try to return after 10-year strike

CHICAGO (AP) -- The president of a union that represents dozens of Chicago hotel workers says it was a hard decision to offer to end a nearly decade-long strike.

Unite Here Local 1 president Henry Tamarin said Thursday that the union has "many more battles to fight."

Congress Plaza Hotel's attorney Peter Andjelkovich says he didn't know about the "unconditional" offer until Tamarin submitted a letter saying the striking workers were abandoning their walkout.

If the hotel decides to take the workers back, they'd have to accept the terms and pay of the contract that expired before the strike began.

The union says it's unclear how many of the 130 striking workers would want to return. Andjelkovich says replacement workers were hired and he doesn't know how many jobs are available.
