House GOP to draft bill replacing Obama health law

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republican leaders are drafting a bill to replace President Barack Obama's health care overhaul if the Supreme Court strikes it down this summer.

Pennsylvania Rep. Joe Pitts, chairman of a health care panel, says the GOP leadership wants to seize the opportunity if Obama's signature legislation is ruled unconstitutional.

The Republican bill would include malpractice reform, high-risk insurance pools for people with pre-existing conditions, tax breaks for individuals and small businesses, and would allow people to buy cheaper coverage from insurers in another state.

The House voted to repeal the health care law last year, but the Democratic-led Senate refused and replacement legislation languished.

Pitts told reporters Wednesday his personal opinion is that some parts of Obama's law will survive.

capitalism is great when there is competition, in health care you have to have it. Can you imagine what we would pay for utilities if it wasn't for the PUC.

Obamacare will be wonderful...until people start having to pay the soaring premium prices year after year since the Democrats want to please their Trial Lawyer friends who want 'free-range' with their frivolous lawsuit practices. Also it will cost much more than budgeted, since Doctors will be prescribing more and more procedures for fear of being sued. Then, since the government is not shelling out a huge portion of the costs, there'll be more fraud and abuse. Moral of story: the US Government is inefficient and corrupt, and we should limit its role in healthcare reform.

sorry..Government IS shelling out a huger amount..

Too many cooks in the stew made the meal inedible. Needs to be reworked from the point of view of those who need it - not those looking for more profits!

I have the same questions for this as I do Obamacare...How much, and who's going to pay for it?
      • Darrell 3 mths ago
Since it's a bill written by the GOP, you'll make millions if you sell health insurance and the person who will pay is the working class american. Same system we've had for the past 30 years.

Hard to say Mike, as nothing is in writing yet. Surely can't be any worse than the crap the Democrats palmed off as "health care reform."

just a another series of republican gifts to big business/corporations to get richer, first the state to state purchase of coverage sounds great except that every state has just one or two major players (like blue cross blue shield in multiple states) that cover most of the states population, the kicker is that once the intra-state restrictions are taken away it will create even larger monopolies that the 'free market' and its forces no longer help force market reform and lower prices

Yeah and O'bamacare wasn't right? Stupid liberals......
      • robjan2003 4 mths ago
No, Obama Care gives to the insurance companies in the form of Govt payments for coverage but they are not BIG business LOL
      • ml 3 mths ago
It's embarrassing how dumb liberals are about the implications of Obamacare and what it handed insurance and pharmaceutical companies. So ill-informed, but willing to blindly follow anyway.

the biggest delusion is the other states have lower health care costs. the reason why other states are cheaper is due to to demographics and laws. Some states have older residents, some states have more homos, some states have more illegal aliens, and some states have stronger nurses union laws such as CA where nurses make 100K and more. Once all the old or homos switch to states with less expensive insurance, the rates there will rise as well.

It is very important to understand there is a difference between the cost of healthcare and the cost of medical insurance; they are two different things. The “Patient Protection Act” has done nothing to contain the cost of healthcare. However, it has actually caused the price of medical insurance to go up. People still file bankruptcy from medical bills directly or indirectly and anyone can get healthcare if they go to the ER. It’s what happens when the bill is due. If this law not repealed; then very soon the ones who thought it was going to be free will find out their tax return is pending on verifying proof of coverage.

The cost of medical insurance has been going up EVERY YEAR for decades. But when the Affordable Care Act goes into effect in 2014, and the insurance industry suddenly gets an estimated 30 million new customers, the costs of health care premiums for the vast majority of Americans are projected to go down - for the first time in decades. As for rising costs of medical coverage, if right wingers had not blocked a public option in the new law, there would have been much greater cost containment.

Perhaps it is time for Boehner and friends to start getting their health care from low cost clinics who offer extremely limited care. Perhaps they can start going to county hospitals where there is a significantly higher mortality rate. Sound like a good idea?

That would mean having to go into "one of those neighborhoods" actually. Doing that is not only terrifying to them but below someone of their standards I suspect.

Give healthcare to the states! Let each state determine how much they can do and afford and then let the people of the state detrmine how much they are willing to pay! Then the INDIVIDUAL RIGHT OF PEOPLE AND BUSINESSES TO MOVE TO THE STATE OF THEIR CHOICE WILL DETERMINE WHAT WE ARE WILLING TO PAY.... and then REPEAL the federal law mandating hospitals to help people without insurance and let charitable institutions figure out how to assist the people who don't have insurance. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE CONSTITUTION SAYING THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS TO PROVIDE HEALTH CARE TO ANYONE JUST LIKE IT DOES NOT SAY THAT IT HAS TO PROVIDE FOOD OR CARS TO ANYONE!

If Obamacare were about affordable healthcare it would have included first and foremost tort reform. Portability is the second thing that experts say is necessary. Instead it has succeeded in gutting medicare and crating 6 new government agencies and 1800 new IRS agents to ENFORCE it.

People, I don't care what party you affiliate with , Obamacare has got to be killed. It has already been discovered that it was written by the lobbyist and lawyers for th eSEIU, Acorn and George Soros. Robert Creamer. 2600 pages full of everything except health care for America. 3200 exemptions so far including WalMart and Muslims. Before you give me a thumbs down , google Gobert Creamer and Stand up Straight.

ok so with all the grandstanding from the republicans over healthcare and what 3 years later they are just now starting to put together a healthcare plan, they still haven't addressed how to get everyone insured so that everyone is envolved, public option or medicare for all is the only way

All Obama has to do is say he supports the bill, then the House will turn around and vote against it.

I'll become a republican when the House proposes a bill that all Americans get the same health care coverage as members of Congress.
