House GOP set to repeal incandescent bulb ban

Republican House members are preparing themselves to take a stand to save the incandescent light bulb.

Monday, the House of Representatives will vote on H.R. 2417, the Better Use of Light Bulbs (BULB) Act, a bill to repeal the federal ban on the incandescent light bulb, contained in a 2007 energy law.

Sponsored by Texas Republican Rep. Joe Barton, the bill would protect Americans’ ability to use the kind of light bulbs they want and not be forced to use mercury containing light sources such as compact fluorescent lights.

“This is about more than just energy consumption, it is about personal freedom. Voters sent us a message in November that it is time for politicians and activists in Washington to stop interfering in their lives and manipulating the free market,” Barton said. “The light bulb ban is the perfect symbol of that frustration. People don’t want Congress dictating what light fixtures they can use.”

Texas Republican Rep. Michael Burgess and Tennessee Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn joined Barton and 12 other Republicans to reintroduce the bill in early 2011.

“These are the kinds of regulations that make the American people roll their eyes,” said Blackburn. “It is typical of a ‘big Washington’ solution to a non-existent problem. In this case it manifests itself as an overreach into every American home, one that ships good jobs overseas and infuriates the American consumer.” (FEMA faces House heat for taking over flood insurance policies)

Come Monday, Americans may be one step closer to having absolute freedom in their light source choices.

“Traditional incandescent bulbs are cheap and reliable. Alternatives, including the most common replacement Compact Fluorescent Lights or CFL’s, are more expensive and health hazards – so why force them on the American people?” said Barton. “From the health insurance you’re allowed to have, to the car you can drive, to the light bulbs you can buy, Washington is making too many decisions that are better left to you and your family.”

Thank God. A little common sense. I'm so tired of these agendas being forced down our throats. We ABSOLUTELY should have the right to decide what light source is right for us. Things like this make me feel less American every single day! I am so glad something is being done about it!

This is another idiocy initiated by tree -hugging ,hypocrytical, far left nuts such as Al Gore and his ilk. If you do not want to use them don't,give the rest of us freedom of choice. I am a registered Independent but these days it seems the Republicans have the most common sense when it comes to issues that affect all Americans.

Common sense? Whether you think the bulbs are good or not common sense would say it's not right important right now. They should be working on cooperating with the other party to improve the recovery.

Stop your foaming at the mouth for a minute and re-read the article -- the GOP is trying to prevent the ban, which WILL preserve the freedom of choice that you desire.

I can't believe that the GOP is doing something that I actually approve of! There are a number of people [myself included] who get headaches from fluorescent lights after a short while. No country should be able to force its citizens to endure headaches.

Did any of you realize that "older" folk, no matter how good their eyesight is, need brighter lights? EVERY optician I know has recommended brightening up the lights in order NOT to strain older eyes. No we don't need 100 watt bulbs, but try as I might, it takes two of those squirrly lightbulbs to read by, and after surgery, my eyesight is great, but not in dim light.
Of course, we have to remember that folks of a certain age are expendable in this new era

Insanity...thy name is Congress. God saved us from people who live in the past and refuse to change even in the face of reliable research that proves CFLs are cheaper in the long term because they last much longer. I've been buying CFLs for 3 years now and will never go back to using the old bulbs. If these idiots had it their way they would prefer candle light and horse and buggies in lieu of CFLs and electric cars. Morons!

Insanity... thy name is Noggy. CFLs are horrible in rooms where lights only need to be on for a couple of minutes (kitchens, bathrooms, closets).... and besides that, why do you care if someone ELSE uses incandescent bulbs? What gives government the right to dictate what happens in my home? Further, "reliable research" in the 1970s told us that we were on the verge of a new global ice age. How'd that work out?

I'm glad that you enjoy them, Noggy. But there are a number of people [myself included] who get headaches from fluorescent lights after a short while. I'm no fan of the GOP, but I approve of their attempt to maintain a choice.

Apparently the teatards forgot that their Messiah Bush signed the ban into law in 2007. Must have no memory due to pea size brains

      Yes, please!

This is a perfect example of why the GOP House members should be voted out. With all of the important stuff that needs to be addressed why would this be considered at all. The Republican-Tea Party alliance has lost all connection with reality. Remember their proclamation that the focus would be jobs jobs jobs.
