Houseboat burns at marina on Ballough Road in Daytona Beach

A possible electrical fire destroyed a houseboat at the Loggerhead Marina on Ballough Road near the Caribbean Jacks Restaurant on Thursday morning, the Daytona Beach Fire Department said.

The fire was reported at 7:53 a.m. at the marina located at 721 Ballough Road, said Daytona Beach fire Lt. Antwan Lewis.

Lewis said the approximately 18-foot houseboat was a total loss.

The owner, who lived on the boat, reported that he had spent Wednesday night at his girlfriend's home and that a neighbor called him to tell him his boat was on fire, Lewis said.

When Daytona Beach firefighters, assisted by firefighters from the Holly Hill Fire Department, arrived on the scene, they found the boat fully involved in flames, Lewis said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Preliminarily, fire officials learned that on Wednesday, the owner pulled in to dock yesterday and had issues with the electrical outlet in his docking spot, so he used an extension cord to connect farther down the dock, Lewis said.

"We don't know if that is what caused the fire, but an investigation is being done to find out," Lewis said.
